Path for MLB Front Office

Hey guys so I would really like to work in the front office for an MLB team someday. I know this will take time, maybe grad school, and a lot of luck. However, I was wondering what would be a good major and school for my undergraduate education to put me on the right track. Thank you.

Harvard maybe.

See if you can find biographies of people whose job you’d like and see what they did.

So I looked around and the backgrounds of MLB GMs and it seemed really varied. Some had Ivy League educations and some just went to state schools. The majors were mostly business related though. The biggest thing was that they almost all broke in with good internships with MLB teams. So I think I will just go to the best school I can get into and then go from there and try to get an internship.

Many FO people also get involved through law (and, of course, many are involved as players). Each year at the Winter Meetings there are hundreds of new graduates that show up with resumes looking for positions. You could try that. Another option to get your foot in the door is with facility operations (ticket sales, travel arrangements, promotions, or even scoreboard operation).

One thing you could try: get a list of the FO staff at a nearby organization and see if you have a connection to any of them (either through organizations, friends, or an alumni group). Then contact that person and ask them to have coffee sometime just to get his or her advice. Ideally you’d want someone in a management position, but at a mid level (a mid level manager should be able to hire and would probably be flattered at the attention - a GM probably gets 10 emails a week asking for a meeting).

That was the #1 career goal for my son. Since he wasn’t good enough to turn pro, he wanted to be able to manage and trade them. He is still waiting for the breakthrough while working in PE as his day job.

PE? Physical Education, like gym class?

G.P. that’s a great idea. I looked around the sites and could not find e-mail addresses though. I’m sure how to obtain them.

PE as in private equity. Went the UG Wharton route.
