I have always wanted to make travelling and living abroad a part of my career, and recently I have become set on possibly making a career (or at least starting after undergrad) at the US Dept. of State. Now I know that the great majority of their employment is based on the foreign service exam, but are there any particular majors/concentrations (paths thru undergrad) that prepare one well for the exam, as well as for the career that would follow it? Any recommendations are welcomed, thanks a lot....

Non traditional routes:

There is a need for supporting staff in many functional areas. Among these are information technology and communications specialists where these people can be found concentrated in certain bureaus, overseas and domestic, security specialists concentrated in the Diplomatic Security area, and office mangement support staff that are posted overseas. Languages and a Peace Corps stint would be viewed favorably.

Of course, finance guys are needed in any organization.
