My daughter and her roomate are considering lofting the beds. They are not so sure how they feel about sleeping far off of the ground, but if it were to make their rooms better for space they would consider it. They are also questioning where they could put their tv. Any thoughts? Also, I believe that the rooms are carpeted...but what kind of condition? On another thread someone mentioned that they "stacked" the dressers for added space, but I thought my daughter said that they were not movable. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Cece,
At some point (open house?), we picked up a spiral bound booklet titled "tour guide" put out by housing. It has glossy photos of all the dorms, inside and out, and lists details about the rooms. I think the post about the stackable dressers referred to someone's room in Capstone. I looked up Patterson in this housing booklet, and it says "Beds are movable, but desks and dressers are not." That is listed under "double rooms." Apparently, there are some triple rooms in Patterson, also, because is says "triple rooms end in 39 except for the 3rd floor." From the picture, it looks like maybe the dressers are built in. Hope that helps a little bit! I'm sure someone with a daughter in Patterson could provide lots more info.

Im not familiar with Patterson as I have a son but will ask him if hes been there. The same info Greenville got in the housing booklet should be available online at the USC housing website (about moveable dressers, etc.)and pics will be there also.
As far as the carpet, assume its pretty "used".You can buy area type rugs instead of a full carpet and lay in on top of where they will actually walk,no sense covering the areas under the beds, dressers. We bought a carpet last year for S who was in Maxcy (rooms there are not carpeted) but it actually was too big and had to slide under the bunked beds and dressers, essentially useless.
Many kids find that putting the beds on the highest setting..the frames are adjustable... gives them lots of storage room underneath w/o the need to loft.
S put his TV on top of one of the two dressers in the room.Don't forget your coaxial cable, its not provided, and get lots of it you may need to stretch where you place the TV vs. where the cable outlet is.

I just asked my D who had a lot of friends (pledge sisters) in Patterson. She said beds are loftable or can just be raised to add storage beneath which is what she and roommate (PAmom's D) did last year. The dresser is built-in next to the closet on the door wall so it doesn't take space in heart of the room and can't be moved. She believes that desks are also fixed but not sure.

If you go to the Housing page on the SC website and take the tour you can see a floorplan of Patterson rooms; there is also a pdf file you can open with more specific information.

PAmom bought a really nice rug at Lowe's I think that survived the year nicely. You might PM her to check where she bought it.

Hope this helps

S says the only room he visited at Patterson had raised beds, not lofted but still seemed to have plenty of room to him (he's biased,he lived in the tiniest room in Maxcy).

Thank you for all of the input. We bought our daughter a laptop yesterday. Do any of you know whether there are firewalls or not in Patterson? We were going to get a component to make the laptop wireless, but were not sure if it would work in Patterson or not. Thanks again!

even if Patterson isn't wireless, other areas of the campus are so you may want to get her the component (Horseshoe area, library, business school building, etc).

My daughter got a mac. I think that they said that there is a wireless card already installed. Would she need the additional component? (I know absolutely nothing about computers, yet my family expects me to take care of it all!)

Thanks

If you acquired a recent MAC, you have everything you need. It comes with Airport, the wireless connector, an iSight camera for online video, and microphone for audio applications. It comes with iChat, a program you and yours can use for video, audio, or text chat.

One thing you might want to consider, or rather that your MAC owner might want to consider, is to acquire BootCamp (free) from Apple, and then to load Windows XP SP2 (this should be available fro USC IT or at a greatly reduced price from the USC bookstore). The computer then can operate as a MAC or as a PC. This would be helpful if the MAC had to access Windows only applications in some USC programs of study (such as the B-School).

Question about tv's! Does anyone have a suggestion on where to put the tv in the room? We can't figure out where! Oh the nerves that are caused by ther unknown! Thanks!

We got D a flatscreen so she can either mount it on the wall, or put it on a flat surface. We'll bring equipment to do it both ways just in case.

kmkord
you may not be able to mount a flatscreen on a college dorm wall. They have very strict rules about what adhesives/tapes etc can be used. You may want to check with the housing office.
Either way, your D will be popular...not many kids I suspect show up with flatscreen TV's.S was lucky to get a 20" for 99$ from Target LOL.

LOL..

I work with the company that makes the TV, so let's just say I didn't pay much for it!! We also got it because I was worried about the amount of space a regular TV would take up.

She was excited that the South tower rooms were a little larger than average. I don't think she'll be spending too much time in her room anyway since she is taking 17 credits and plans on rushing.

She was worried about paying the extra $240 for the 17th credit, but it's the lab for the Honors astronomy class, and I think it's definately worth it. She's hoping it will help her with registering for the second semester classes, especially with the AP credits she got.

The girls had a flat screen mounted on their wall. As long as you leave the room as you found it you will be fine. We just purchased a putty knife and putty to fill the holes. The RA thought the room looked better when the girls left than when they arrived. I actually enjoyed filling in all the holes. haha! Quite honestly, there were so many holes in the wall at Bates West it would have been hard to tell where we hung the t.v....

Oh one more thing....your d will be popular....especially on Grey's Anatomy night!

LOL...

D loves Grey's Anatomy...

It looks like we will be paying a bit extra for D to have a single room in South Tower. Things weren't working out too well with the roomate. As I mentioned in another post, having facebook and myspace to look at can cause problems.... I'm not a worrier on general, but I guess some things are just different here up North.

....More Questions!!! (btw, the advice and suggestions make my life so much easier - I cannot thank you all enough!)

OK, Here goes:

Did anyone use a particular rod for dorm windows for curtains or valances? Does the 3m stuff keep them up?

My daughter and her roomate decided to loft beds (rooms are ridiculously small). Hope we did not make a mistake, but we ordered from tnt lofts, because they will have them assembled when the girls move in (husband has had open heart surgury and I am afraid for him to have to put together). Now my daughter is saying she wants a futon under one, and then frig and micro and other stuff under the other). I think that the "collapsable chairs" look comfy (and not so expensive-who is going to move this stuff out at the end of the year, and just "WHAT IF" they don't get along after all?) Also, don't you think that there may be some futons that have been used by other students for sale when they move in?)

Patterson has NO wall space! Did anyone buy a metal unit that goes at the end of the bed that goes up high and has shelves on top? I wonder if it would fit.

The closet doors in Patterson. Do you know if they can take the "over the door hanging things?

I read somewhere that there was a rumor that Patterson recarpeted. Do you think an area rug is still a good idea? If so, what size?

Any other suggestions or thoughts about "room settup" would be so much appreciated, Thanks! -

Two last question on rushing. The recommendations - I think they are "sorority" specific...? What if you have a recommendation from one alumni of a particular sorority - does it also go to other sororities? Last but not least! The white dress. OK, call me stupid - should it be like a nicer sundress or more formal than that and if more formal, do you mean like a coctail dress?

Thanks again!

I have to laugh b/c curtains are the last thing my S would ever put up LOL
I would think your best bet would be a tension type rod.
Don't forget the idea of lofting the beds is to save room, now you're talking of adding things underneath. You have to store the bedframes if you loft so those would have to be somewhere in the room, plus the desks, etc.You might want to hold off and see how much room there actually is.
I saw those metal end of bed thingies in Bed Bath. They look like they're made for a bed that doesnt have the type of frame (heavyish wooden posts) that I saw at USC and alot of other schools.
S moved his stuff at the end of the year with his friends (they all helped each other-group efforts, no parents) used the biggest cars people had to move to the storage place.
You might want to wait till you see the closet dors before investing in the over the door things. The door tops need clearance for those things. Face it,one way or the other you'll be making trips to Wal Mart/Bed Bath either to buy stuff, or return the stuff you bought by mistake!!
Can't help you with Rush info LOL
You can call Housing with questions. S called Friday...you get put on hold but they answer pretty quickly.S had a q about bed size in his apt, the 2 bedroom and 3 bedroom apts turn out to have different sized beds in the same building and they confirmed that fact for us !
