PAVE at Vanderbilt 2011

Hey everyone, I wanted to start a thread for those that are interested in or have already been accepted into the 2011 PAVE program at Vandy. I just recieved my acceptance email yesterday and I want to start meeting some people who I'll be with for 6 weeks this coming summer.

I plan to start a facebook page soon, so be on the lookout for that too!

congratz. i wanted to this program last year but i wanted to get ahead in math and take a physics course.

Is this program good? They creeped me out by sending me an email last night with my address…

Lol they did the same to me, apparently you’re either teacher rec’d or they get your info from PSAT/SAT information. I’m not too sure. Everything ive read regarding this program is positive. The Facebook group from 2 years back is still somewhat active. All the kids seemed to not want to leave lol. I’m super excited for it to be honest, plus it’s at Vanderbilt lol. From the itinerary thing, it’s basically like 6-8 hours of work a day (like a school day) then you can do whatever. I’d look into it helper.

Alright, so I’ve been seriously thinking of applying and I actually just posted some questions I’ve been wondering in the Vanderbilt Forum. They are:

Most importantly, if I haven’t really been considering a career in computer science, engineering, or pre-med, will I fit in okay? I hope to have a career in business and might major in something such as economics, management, or communications.

I don’t have any experience in computer technology classes and have limited knowledge about physics. I have taken pre-calculus.

How are the academics? Will I be challenged enough? Will it be too hard?

How is the social life? Is there enough independence and free time available or mostly work? I don’t intend to have a summer based solely on academics.

Is bringing a car advisable and would I be allowed to leave for one weekend (4th of July) for family purposes?

If you are planning to attend or have participated, feel free to help!

I would have to say that deciding to participate in the pave program was probably the best decision I ever had. Entering the program, I had only taken Pre-Calculus and had no physics experience. Therefore, I struggled at the beginning of the program, but the counselors are unbelievably helpful and willing to take the time to help those that may need help. This program is challenging for most who attend, but there are a few exceptions to this rule. Also in the first week, they try and scare you by giving an unsolvable question, that in the end they just laugh and say welcome to pave.
I also had no interest in a career as an engineer, doctor or any of the other things advertised, but that didn’t matter. This program teaches you valuable lessons that can be applied into your senior year and also your years in college.
The reason that this program is so awesome is the social life. When I accepted into this program, I thought I would go and be surrounded by a bunch of nerds and brains. But when I arrived it turned out the program is full of girls and guys who are smart and love to have fun. This is truely a pre-college experience. Independence is an understatement. This program puts full trust in the attendies that they will make the smart chooses. At all hours of the day you are allowed to do whatever you want. The dean is super fun and attending classes, doing the work, and having fun in the free time is completely manageable.
Having a car is advisable, but you are able to get around just fine without one. The surrounding area is full of stores, dinners, and other typical college surrounding, and there are also taxis always available if you want to go into downtown nashville or shopping, the program also provides buses to transport to the weekend activities and the shopping mall on fridays.

I say if you can definitely attend the PAVE program. It is unbelievable how much fun you will have and how much it helps your school work when you return. This program helped me get a 5 point higher ACT score, taught me how to write lab papers, and taught me valuable lessons I will need in applying to college and also attending college. If you have any other questions please let me know, but I seriously suggest you apply.
Also if you are planning on attending any big east coast school, the letter of recs you recieve from the program give you a super high chance of getting in. In the past few years, the acceptance rate of students who applied to vandy is above an 80%.
Currently, I applied ED to vanderbilt, a school that I would never have applied to before this program, my roommate if we both get in is going to be my best friend from pave and I know of atleast 75 other people who attended pave that are applying to vanderbilt.
I hope this helps :)

wow, thank you for that post! you seriously don’t know how excited reading that makes me!
Cant wait for this summer to come!

My daughter attended the PAVE program summer before last and had an incredible time. She met some great kids, learned to live away from home, and enjoyed Nashville. While she applied ED to Vanderbilt and was rejected, she was accepted and is happily attending Washington and Lee. Several of her fellow PAVE alumni are now her classmates at W&L. In closing, if you have an opportunity to experience this program, take it! Doc V (Dr. John Veillete) loves the students and works hard to create a phenominal summer experience!

Hey! I just got accepted yesterday(:

Congrats kimzey! Be on the lookout for the facebook group, I’m going to start it soon.
Duke, thanks for that post. Everytime I read posts like that I get even more excited about this summer. I already know it’s going to be awesome.

Thanks oswald and duke for those great posts. I am definitely applying now and really hope I get accepted. It sounds like a great time and I’m very excited now!

Awesome just let me know when you start it!

Will do, probably going to be tonight. I’ll post the link on this thread.

Here is the facebook group that anyone can join to discuss the program and meet the members.

I got accepted to pave a few days ago… Im really excited to go but i thought my chances of getting in weren’t so good… I have a gpa of 3.33 weighted last time i saw.How does everybody else’s gpa’s compare?

My weighted gpa at my school is 4.82. My uw is 3.72. I think that I have a pretty rigorous courseload, AP stat, AP calc AB, AP Chem, AP English Lang comp, honors physics, and honors American history, plus a computer class which I’m probably switching into a leadership class for.

But anyways, Beemer, join the FB group!

I haven’t sent in all parts of the application yet, but I’m in the process. My GPA is 4.0 UW and 4.3 W. I take all of the AP classes available to me, though that is only 3 right now. Jarred, your courseload frightens me. Beemer, I’m sure you are fine, but we can help each other and get help from the smarties.

I joined the group (: …though I am not officially accepted.

Lol, its not as rough as it seems.

BTW Everyone who asked to be in the group, is accepted!

*into the facebook group

I went to PAVE over the past summer and I completely agree with oswaldc93! It was the best 6 weeks of my life and I highly recommend it!
