PAVE program in VANDERBILT

any good?...my parents wanted me to do it because its 6-weeks long. and less money than most of the other money-minded summer programs.

I just faxed the info request over. Please share what you find.

Pbaby...do a search. There is excellent, detailed CC feedback from past participants. My D is considering this program for next summer. Best.

We got a packet from them and if I remember correctly, they wanted something like $6000. I don't know much about the program but It feels like another overpriced money making program.

^
Based on the comments I have read here, I disagree with the comment above. The program's marketing material offer no depth, but others seem to have found it challenging, fun and worthwhile. Again..do the research.

I did research the program when I first got the nice brochure from them. Bottom line is that there is not much to go on in terms of information about the program even here at CC. I admit that most kids that went there liked the program but from what I read; take 2 college classes for 6 weeks, lots of free time for socializing, classes were basically pass/fail and the students that were accepted to the program were not particularly the best academically. This is from what I read here at CC. Mostly, I was responding to the OP who said that this program is less money than most other money-minded summer program. I think I don't go out on a limb to say that this is one of the most expensive summer program around.

Thanks you for sharing the research.

Try this...

PAVE is an absolute blast. =]

I was just accepted to PAVE 2009. I'm still not completely convinced its worth the money so has anyone gone that could provide some insight into the advantages of going?

What exactly do people do there? Will we be able to choose what classes we want to take...? The letter I got was very brief, and the official site doesn't offer much info.

Please reply if you can, thanks!

I contacted the PAVE admissions office and was told that the selection process is very selective. They have a rolling admissions process and only take 175 students. Of the 175, approximately 25% are HS seniors who have already been admitted to Vandy in the fall (you probably can infer the type of student by that alone)

I was just admitted to the PAVE 2009 program. One of my friends went and he said it was definitely worth it. hes on his way to vandy this spring, too.
its a great program from what i hear and definitely worth the time and money. The selection process is very selective, also.

hey guys! I know this is lame…but i am really looking forward to meeting people before I head down to PAVE this summer…i found that someone made a FB group called PAVE 2009…and yea…i think it would be awesome if people joined and we get to meet some people before June 22. :stuck_out_tongue:
so yea…join woot!

I would really like to know what you think about the PAVE program. Is it really strict with study and classes and a bunch of brainiacs running around conducting experiments? Is it fun? Is there a good mix of kids? I read that a lot of super smart Asians attend the program, is that right? Do kids attend who are not on the path to Engineering? How’s the weather, hot and humid?

Thanks for your response since I am trying to find the right/best way to spend my summer.

Our son attended the PAVE program in the summer of 2008. It was a
summer of career and collegiate definement for him. The dean, John
Veillette was awe-inspiring. The personal attention he gave to
each student and their family was a gift we will never forget. The
program’s rigor challenges a student to think beyond their shell of
adolescents while smoothing out the wrinkles toward maturity,
self-reliance, and sophistication. PAVE was skillfully designed by
Dr. Veillette in 1990 and is taught by him and my other talented
faculty at Vanderbilt University. Our son came home from PAVE with
direction and polish. It was an investment we have declared as
life molding and life changing. Each student and parent we spoke
with at the end of the program had the same sentiment.

Does PAVE stand for something specific?
I was reading over the website and could not find any information about the name.

To all the people that have been to PAVE…

Do you guys recommend a single or double dorm?

I was just checking to see if anyone had information about the PAVE program from last year

I’m a counselor, so I help lots of kids choose pre-college programs like PAVE. While I still love “Vandy” as a whole, this summer program does not measure up. First, there is little diversity. Next, there is a great deal of partying during this program. Lots of semi-local kids who have older siblings nearby gain easy access to liquor. The program’s “dean” told last year’s group, “I know there will be drinking, but don’t let me see it.” My experience with other summer programs at Iowa, Brown, Columbia, Emerson and Cornell are different; if your 16 or 17-year old is caught with drugs or liquor, he/she is home on the next plane – period. Finally, it just wasn’t very rigorous or representative of an elite university’s curriculum. My students found that many kids skipped class, left on weekends, missed assignments and generally weren’t very serious about the program. Even the “finals” were soft…there weren’t any; students had to submit binders of their work, which most kids threw together the night before they were due (hardly a thoughtful, reflective exercise). Overall, PAVE is a lot of money, as most of these programs are, but probably not worth it. There are simply better ones out there.
