Pay Cuts to Faculty and Staff at all UCs

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to inform you of some news I received today. I work at UC Berkeley while attending a local Community College in hopes to transfer to UCB or UCLA. We just received news regarding how the UC plans to balance their budget deficit. One aspect involves the faculty and staff being forced to take an 8% pay cut. This will likely result in some faculty will be lured away from the UCs to other private or out of state schools. This loss of faculty combined with the new faculty hiring freeze will, in my mind, be very unfortunate and will result in a decrease in the strength of the once mighty UCs. In the short term, it might not affect them too bad, but in the long term, I think, their could be some serious damage. This still might not change my plans, but it is something to consider.

I don’t think it will cause a very serious shift in faculty. I talked to some PhD students who were looking for jobs last year and they said the pay at the top UCs is great(like 6figure starting with housing etc) but not like at an ivy league uni. So my intuition is that the majority do not care about the money as much. I said to one prof, “i can already tell you make a ton of money.” And he was like, “What? I’m a professor… we aren’t paid that well.” And well, it seemed like it to me that he really wasn’t paid very well.

More than likely, the majority of profs lost will be ones without tenure of any sort, or the youngest profs. It all sucks and some will leave… but there’s a bunch of hot shots that won’t go anywhere. Until harvard/yale/stanford whips out their 7figure checkbook

You can see what your profs make at this site: [State Salaries - Sacramento News - Local and Breaking Sacramento News | Sacramento Bee](http://www.sacbee.com/statepay/)

Some of the soc profs I’ve had/am having make from as little as $25,000 (non-tenure track), to just over $100,000 (tenure-track), and one even makes over $200,000 (tenured).

200k is some serious dough. :O

200k isn’t much but some of the other salaries are huge…

Most of those UC employees who make big bucks are doctors/professors, and doctors in the private industry make way more than them.

Old (non professional) professors at your UC make $90k-$111k plus benefits, with a few that make $119+. Note that it takes years to get to this spot.

Before that, most professors start out as Assistant Professors who make $62K+ a year. After 12 years as an assistant professor, you can advance to an associate professor who makes $77K+ a year. After another 12 years you can go up and be a professor if approved. Some individuals are able to jump to a higher rank if they have prior work experience.

^omg, this means you need to be around 50 years old to be a professor.

Well, not always. I think it’s possible to start as a full time “professor,” but you better be some prodigy or have something spectacular to obtain the selective position.

But, you’re right. There are plenty full time “professors” that obtain their position after many years of research, publishing, and teaching.

Sorry that my post was misleading.

I was looking at some of the UCLA philosophy department professors. some are in their early 30s making 6 figures and they’re just assistant professors. that must be nice.

yes, the top professors in the big name fields make good money, but you are forgetting about a lot of others, especially in fields that aren’t as fruitful or popular. assistant and associates often don’t make great money. don’t be fooled by the top dogs.

and fyi, i already know of one professor that is retiring because of this and he is a huge name.
