Need your help.

DS was accepted rolling EA (for Fall 2006) to school he really loves and will most likely attend, but we still feel the need to look just to be sure since it's so early in the application year.

Question: Are we allowed to submit an enrollment card and deposit, while still looking at other schools? DS's school says that enrollment fee is fully refundable, if school is notified in writing by May 1. Plus submitting the deposit and enrollment card now ensures that DS will have higher priority pick of dorm facilities.

What is the right thing to do??

Thanks.

Also, school says DS will probably receive some academic money...to be decided in early.

Does sending back the card and fee now make him less likely to get academic money, because DS is already in the pocket.

Tx

We had a similar situation two years ago - prompt admit to a safety school that wanted a refundable deposit. Made the deposit. Notified them in time. Got the money back promptly.

Regarding your second point, after paying the deposit, she was offered a big scholarship. (boy did turning that down make me groan!)

If a school says the deposit is refundable, they know, and expect, that some will ask for a refund, so we parents shouldn't feel guilty about taking them up on their offer!

Congratulations to your son on an admit so early in the cycle!

Even if they don't give a refund, yes you are still allowed to look at other schools. The only thing you risk losing is your deposit money.

My impression is that this is different from double depositing in April, which is a no-no. Schools which tie things like dorm assignments to early deposits seem to be expecting this, esp as they have the notation that you can get the early deposit back till May 1.

School says on its enrollment card that students should only make a deposit to one school. I assume that if DS prefers a second school over the first and wants to make a deposit there, he simply needs to request a deposit refund at this first school at the same time he makes a deposit on the second. I guess that the first school is trying to say, only one deposit active at a time. That's fair.

Agreed. So I don't see a problem in this case.

It's kind of like getting off a waitlist, no? You've already deposited your money to one school, but can still get accepted to another one and decline the first.

I'm curious as to what school (if you dont mind saying) does an admit so early?

CATHYMEE -
Many rolling admissions schools start taking applications up to 18 months prior to enrollment date. DS could have applied as early as March 2005 for September 2006. The earlier you apply to these schools the better because you are first in line for admissions, merit award, and housing, plus you beat the frenzy of students seeking admissions, and you can have a calmer, more focused and productive senior year.
