Paying for BU

I want to go to BU, but my mom is like no, because of how much it costs.

Do you guys know of any specific scholariships that BU has or any tips on how to pay for it? I really want to go to BU ><

Go to the BU website and find the financial aid page. You'll find information about the various merit scholarships. Regarding need-based aid, there's a way to calculate your EFC (expected family contribution). Browse through the Financial Aid Forum.

Just apply. BU is known for being generous with financial aid. A lot of people told me not to apply to BU for the same reason. Sticker shock is no reason not to apply to any school. If you want to go there, apply and see what happens. Just be clear with your parents about how much aid you'd have to get to make it work and stick to that. Just be honest with each other. But from much personal experience, I applied to schools that were $20,000 less than BU, and after financial aid, BU was the cheapest for me.

wow thx for the advice ^^

do you guys like it at BU? What do you guys like about it? I am from South Florida so I am really curious...I should probably plan a visit to BU shouldn't I? lol

thanks again you guys.

This isn't a money answer, but BU is very generous with AP credits. My kid could very easily graduate a year early.

Yes. Definately come visit. The only way to get a complete picture of any school is to visit. Especially seeing as you're from Florida, it's a very different climate and general feel up here.

I give tours so maybe I'll see you when you come visit :-)

koo, when should i visit? and of course, I have to convince the parents to let me travel all the way up there, but maybe before my senior year (this summer) i'll come up there ^^

as for the AP credits...i took some AP classes, but most of my classes are IB...but BU accepts only IB HL credits right? That's fine though, i have an opening in my schedule, I can switch AP Calc w/ another HL class I guess lol

lostandfound5...ur a student at BU right? what are you majoring in? If I go to BU, or anywhere else for that matter, I plan on majoring in Advertising, that's why I'm so into BU.

What part of SoFL?

uh...miramar i'd say pembroke pines, but it's not on the map...usually when someone asks my parents they say miami cause everyone knows miami, but it's kinda like FAR away from us...so im gonna say miramar cause it's right there next to me even though im in pem pines

haha wow i complicated the answer ^^

y do you ask?

I'm moving to Boca.

Yes I am a BU student. I'm a senior and a Business Major with a concentration in Organizational behavior. I also volunteer at the admissions office so I have an obsene amount of knowledge about BU in general. So feel free to ask away or PM me if you want. :-) Good luck on the whole process. And if you have questions about IB credits call the Admissions office, they can definately help you out.

wow boca? it's nice over there...

and lostandfound5...i'll def. PM you if i have questions...goodness knows how stressed I am thinking about college xD

actually here is another Q: what is ur opinion on the dorms at BU? and does everyone just walk around to get to things, like is everything close enough to just walk? or do most take the bus or drive?

thx for the help ^^

oh just thought of another question...which high school grades does BU look at? like junior grades or all of high school?

Yeah, Boca's pretty tight.

I'm rooming in West. Best food, good location, dorms are fine. My roommate (who's a soph.) roomed in Warren but realized he made a mistake and it was too late to change. He didnt dislike Warren though.

BU's going to look at each year of grades.

so am i..pardon my use of the phrase...screwed over if i have a D for one semester...i mean it was a rly hard class, not to mention IB...but yeah I'm freaking out over it x.x

They give out a number of half tuition scholarships. For more -

See <a href="http://www.bu.edu/admissions/apply/scholar_merit.html#deans%5B/url%5D">http://www.bu.edu/admissions/apply/scholar_merit.html#deans</a>
and <a href="http://www.bu.edu/finaid/grants/schol_freshman.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.bu.edu/finaid/grants/schol_freshman.html</a></p>

There's no harm in applying, even if you don't think you can afford it. BU offers a number of scholarships. I got a full-tuition scholarship (that I was not expecting at the time I applied); so for me, BU ended up being cheaper than a state school. I know many others who got good money.
Just apply. You never know, you might get some money.

You aren't necesarilly screwed. THere is a space on the app for any explanations about anything unusual. I used it to explain why it was impossible for me to take more than 2 AP classes. Just don't use "The teacher didn't like me" :-)

The dorms are really varied the student union maintains a website called BU Backdoor (sorry I don't have the add on me, just google it). That should give you a good overall look at what the dorms have and look like.

And everyone walks or takes public transportation around. Don't bring a car, it's too expensive and not necessary.

BU was the most expensive school I applied to but yet it ended being the cheapest. You never know what could happen. Just apply and see.

thanks a lot you guys, it's been hard convincing my parents to let me go there, they are still very skeptic...

explanations! yay! that is a smart thing to put on an app, i ddnt know they existed...and yea, I would never use that pathetic line that people use all the time xP you don't know how many times in the day I have to listen to people say that -.-;;

and about the car, yea they just brought it up one day...I dnt really care, I hate driving, but they are like, oh you might need it, make things easier (however i think they had a me-at-UF kind of mindset) I am glad to hear i can just walk everywhere.

i'll make sure to check out the BU Backdoor thing, thanks.
