Paying for internet?

When we move into our dorms....we have to pay for our internet right?
so how do we do that? do we give someone our bank account number or something?

i don't think we have to pay for the internet.....do we?

Internet is free.

There is a 5 gigabyte/week bandwidth cap (that counts for uploads AND downloads combined) to make sure you don't go file-sharing happy but there are ways around it (read "DC++").

what's dc++

Direct Connect ++

It's a C++ version of the original DirectConnect client.

And more importantly, you want i2hub (www.i2hub.com) which uses DC++ to connect to the Internet2 hub with other campuses.

Internet is free, though you have to go through IRC (In Room Connection workshop) before you can go online. You'll be online in about a week or less. You can also go to one of the Wireless Hot Spots in your unit building. You can find out all of that at: http://rescomp.berkeley.edu

Is IRC mandatory? Can't we just pick up the programs required for gaining access to the internet at certain locations throghout campus and log on?

TTG

"The easiest way to sign up for IRC service is to attend a Cal Connect workshop during Welcome Week, the week after you move in. During the workshop, you will learn about what computing resources are available for you and you will be able to sign up for an IRC account."

That implies that there may be another way to get IRC, but it wouldn't be convenient. You will not be able to go online via the Ethernet cable if you do not go through IRC session easily. You can use the internet at the academic centers without IRC. IRC is just for those who want to use the internet in their room.

You can use your units hot spot (it's on the study lounge in your unit) without IRC. Just use the Network ID provided on the website I provided.

oh the units don't have wireless built in? we'll need ethernet cables then. damn.

Hmm.. thanks for the link I'll skim through out. I'm still convinced the workshop will be one of those "don't you dare fileshare" type of things and they'll weave a lot of useless stuff in, with a chance to get your IRC account at the very end. I'll look through the site, and perhaps email them to find out if there's a manual process in doing this (and not necessarily 'more difficult.'). Thanks again!
