Paying for MIT

So MIT is looking to be one of my top choices for both going to school and running there, but paying for it is an issue with my family being upper middle class (100k per year) but not enough to pay for it outright. I'm looking for pretty much any way of paying for MIT since it is pretty much my top choice right now.

My first question is about using military programs to pay for MIT. I was thinking about using ROTC to help pay but I would like to be in the military working with ship nuclear reactors, I don't want to be taken out of school or a career for combat. The other choice is the DoD's SMART program which seems like a good one for me since it would use my major (physics) but i'm not entirely sure how that works. any help would be appreciated

Hey we got two things in common, I got in EA as well, and if I do go am going to run cross country and track. My parents are currently struggling with the burdens of college so we are looking towards big scholarships, I just applied foe the Gates-Millenium, and am looking around for others as well. Coach Taylor told me something really good when I was talking to him. He said that over the summer internships pay a lot, like 30,000$ a lot, so that helps a lot of people afford MIT

What times do you guys run?

for me 9:30’s for 3200 and 4:20’s for 16. 15:4x for 5k xc

Nice. One of our guys had time like you and ran for MIT but then quit (this was a few years back).

haha thats reassuring

Have your parents tried one of the EFC calculators available on the internet? My family made more than that and I qualified for about 50% financial aid at MIT.

I have run 51.0, 1:57, low 4:20’s, , and a 15:52 5k, I have never and hopefully will never run a two mile

Nobody earns 30,000 a summer while an MIT undergrad. That is 10,000 per month. You can expect up to 20,000 if you’re good. The average is probably around 8-12,000. Don’t bank on that.
Also, if you’re indifferent about ROTC, go air force. They definitely offer the best deal, and will allow you to use your education right out of college, unlike the others. They will cover your tuition and fees if that’s the route you’d like to take.

Wow we all run like the same times. Anyway sorry I couldn’t help with financial aid, it’s just nice to chat about track from time to time.

30k is BS. you misunderstood. If not, it would cause me to have some doubts about this coach. For rising sophs it’s more like $12 / hr or $9 and change for a summer urop. ROTC works, but then there’s that pesky military commitment. My sympathies though. MIT finaid is not very hospitable to families in this income range.

Why don’t you apply for financial aids?
