is it true that there are no merit based scholarships at northwestern? someone told me it is all need based aid. I know my family will not get any need based aid, but are there any scholarships i can apply for to lighten northwestern's heavy load? i saw something in a nw packet about some college scholarship finance form or something, but is that just like the financial aid form?

The started giving merit-based money to some people a year ago. There's no formal application (I think). The amount is kinda arbitrary in the sense that it's not full/half-tuition.

Wow, I'd love to see the merit-based aid? Who's getting that, Sam Lee? I really would like to know--I'm not being sarcastic! I do know that Bienen Music has a little but not much, as the admissions counselor admitted. What NU does have is $2000 for all--most?--National Merit Finalists who attend. Would love to see merit aid at NU, but most universities and colleges that are similarly competitive aren't big on merit aid.

I remember some people got $7000/yr. Not much compared to those full-tuition ones given out by schools like Duke or Chicago.

This is really merit, not need-based? Do you know the particular school? I'm curious....

Bienen offers it to very competitive musicians that they believe will be admitted to schools such as Juilliard and Eastman with scholarships, so Bienen will try to compete by offering merit-aid. usually only works for regular decision as well, ironically.

ahha... do you think id be able to get at least a little bit of scholarship of somesort if ive got a twin broth going off to college this year also and my older brothers gona be goin off to medschool? i really hope thats worthy of some sort of scholarship but thing is my family's pretty well off. not sure how much my parents make but its at least enough for a good sized house in the suburbs of boston...

Phatomic,

I am not sure how FA works in the US as I was an international student. You were basically asking what your EFC is given that you family is financing your siblings' education. I don't know if those are considered but your case has nothing to do with merit-based scholarhips.

Northwestern University - Undergraduate Financial Aid

It's called Founders Scholarship
Summary: Northwestern created the Founders Scholars Program in 2007 to honor the nine individuals who founded the University in 1850.
Eligibility: Awards are offered each year to a select group of incoming students from middle income families. While academic credentials weigh heavily in the selection process, other criteria taken into account include student essays, recommendations, leadership experience and potential, and academic interests. There is no separate application to receive consideration for a Founders Scholarship.
Award range: $14,750 average award in 2008-09. These scholarships are renewable for four years so long as students make satisfactory academic progress.

Since they say it's for students from middle income family, it seems to me it's a hybrid of merit-based and need-based scholarship.

Northwestern for the most part practices NEED-based aid. I got grants, scholarships, work-study and loans to finance my education at Northwestern.

^ how much did you receive to go to NU?
