Paying for NU

How do you guys do it? Northwestern costs a fortune, and it doesnt provide any merit scholarships either. My family's in the middle class. Will i get any aid? We're not poor but not rich either.

haha i wish i knew. or, i wish my parents knew.
you'll get some aid, not a ton. work-study, student loans, etc. if there's a will, there's a way.

i really don't know how it'll play out for me, because my parents are divorced, but i'm under joint custody, so technically they split 50/50 but the CSS and FAFSA people can't wrap their mind around such a concept so we have to declare a custodial parent and one of my parents is remarried but their income technically doesn't go toward me at all, and gah it's such a mess.

if you're middle class, chances are you probably won't get any aid at all. I got nothing, so I've had to take out loans...lots of debt in my future...

Have you contacted the Financial Aid office at NU? They will talk w/ your parents and give them a good idea of what the EFC looks like.

no i haven't, but i'll be sure to do that

I think there are a lot of different ways to define middle class. I've heard people complain about not getting any help, only to find they had parents with incomes well into six figures.

It is said that they don't make it easy, but they make it possible. That was certainly the case for my daughter. She wouldn't have been able to attend otherwise. Don't let people scare you away from trying.

They ask things like how much your family home cost in the first place, not just what it is worth now, and some other good questions. The process seemed fair to us.

Northwestern's pretty good with aid compared to other places. If you really need it you'll get what you need. If your family can get by ok without it you may not get much if any, but then again you dont really need it.

what about aid for intels..will tht b to hard to get?

by intel do you mean the science fair thing?? there's no merit aid at NU, except for National Merit Scholars, who get 500-2000/year

Sorry I was not very clear by intel I meant international applicants

Only 40% of Northwestern students receive some type of financial aid. Most of that is work/study, loans and grants. While most of us hate the idea of loans, Northwestern loans and federal subsidized loans are often BETTER than private loans.
