One of the teachers at my school is taking a group to Costa Rica for 10 days over spring break. My teacher talked to me about it and he said that if I wanted to go he would reserve me a spot as there is a limit to the number that can go. However, my summer was full of baseball and thus I was not able to work much. The trip will cost about $2300 and I was wondering what the best way to raise the $$ was. (I won't be able to work during school as I will have XC in the fall into winter) Thanks for any possible ideas.

Avoid school sponsored trips if possible. The experience is much more fulfilling going with your friends, since you guys won’t have to adhere to a rigid itinerary as well as general school enforced constraints due to liability.

Well, my school has several trips like this that are run by individual teachers. Though you of course have to follow school rules, people who have went said that the trips were really good.

As for they money, is there any way the school can help you out financially? Maybe mention to the teacher that you would go, but that is a lot of money for a trip.

My Spanish club went on a similar trip to Spain over the summer. The trip was about $3500, and I raised about half of it through school fundraisers. I paid for one fourth with my money from my job, and my parents paid for the other quarter. This way, it was relatively affordable. But I had a summer job, and I kept it through the school year and into the next summer.

To be realistic, if you can’t get the money, you can’t go on the trip. I definitely agree that a school sponsored trip isn’t really ideal. It was great for me, because I’d never been on a real vacation before, and this trip taught me a lot on how to travel and get around cities. My parents also would never have allowed me to go with just friends.

See if your school has any fundraisers for this trip, or see about getting one started. Granted, you probably won’t raise as much money as I did, because my school has been doing the same trips and fundraisers for at least twenty years. People look forward to the time of the year when they buy pizzas from us, and the 35 students who went on the trip sold about 4000 pizzas total. We made them in a few hours at the school on a Saturday morning. If you can arrange something like that, you can significantly reduce your financial burden. But if you can’t get the money, be realistic about it. If you can’t go, you can’t go.
