Any suggestion on a graceful way of coming up with real data on specific schools?

Agree with Biohelpmom: they first ‘over accepted’ on purpose, and then had a bigger waitlist pool on purpose just in case the yield would be particularly low. It turned out the top tier schools didn’t have to turn to the waitlist to achieve a satisfactory enrollment. With the current overenroll situation, even some change their minds over the summer there would still be enough students enrolling this fall. That’s called “enrollment management”. But the returning students’ scenario is trickier. If the economy stays weak or unstable, the next few years will see a lot of uncertainty as to how many students will not come back the next year, or need FA to be able to come back.

I can tell you not to count on Andover’s enrollment wilting: they took care of new financial aid requests from current students as well as the incoming, and I think that people probably knew this spring whether they were going to be in trouble financially or not (not like last year, where the meltdown was relatively sudden and brutal).

Agree with Lemonade.
In terms of overenrollment – a friend that is in charge of admission for a prominent school has seen applications quadruple, and more, for the school in the past 4 years or so. The number of kids hasnt gone up that high. The big problem are the families playing all angles and applying to more than 5/6 schools as in the past. The schools dont know where the first choice lies, so either overenroll or else, underenroll and over wait list.

Well, the day for cutting and sending checks for about half of this year’s tuition (June 30) has come and gone for many BS’s. I guess we should be hearing soon whether or not there are now gaps in the ranks of the anticipated enrolling classes. That said, from all that I have gathered, parents seem to be paying the pipers. If so, good. I hope that they all can deliver to the schools their bucks and babes on time during these rough economic days. Good luck to all. If anyone hears news, one way or the other, on this front, please post, if possible. Thanks.

I heard of one person on CC taken off the Andover waitlist in on 7/1.

Are there any outside vendors that offer different payment plans than the monthly plan? My income is heavily weighted towards bonuses in March, and given the economy we were not able to save all we need for this year. In past years I just would have taken out a home equity line, but that is likely tough right now.
