PBS Amherst Admissions video

So I was watching the video PBS did on Amherst admissions, and it is really crazy to see how fast they go through people. You spend a lot of time and get stressed out on an application and its hard to see how its skimmed and then your acceptance is decided like that. For one person they rejected him simply because he had a slip in his grades one semester of 10th grade. That slip was getting 2 Bs and the rest A's.

<a href="http://pbs-newshour.virage.com/cgi-bin/visearch?user=pbs-newshour&template=template.html&squery=%2BVideoAsset:pbsnh062204%5B/url%5D">http://pbs-newshour.virage.com/cgi-bin/visearch?user=pbs-newshour&template=template.html&squery=%2BVideoAsset:pbsnh062204</a></p>

bump.........

Video doesn't work for me.

I watched the video and just so people don't totally freak out, the admissions officer said IF he'd just dropped a couple grades to Bs, that would have been okay. But there were, I think, three grades dropping to B- because of intense parental pressure. Possibly not only the grade drop, but the issue of the parents, weighed into their decision.

Your probably right, I bet there's more that in it then the video says. It was funny though how they laughed and threw out that one girl's application as soon as they saw she had a bad grade in math one semester.

Use RealPlayer for it. The Windows Media Player one doesnt work.

thats really interesting.....
but i have to wonder if all of that voting was staged. and the discussion as well. there is a huge conspiracy behind it. just kidding lol.

Interesting, very interesting...

I think the whole thing was staged.

anyways saw this over a month ago posted on the parents board.. you guys should visit there more often.

good link, thanks

This video is at least a couple of years old now, just so you know.

I was amazed that the kid from the prep school who's mom served on the board of trustees was rejected.

ROFL...my school is on that video..did you see Fordham Prep part? I go to that school and that priest "Fr. Okonsky" is my english teacher. And those 2 black kids earlier in the video go to public schools in Bronx, NY near my Prep school..that school is reallly BAD (Clinton)

And that video is only a yr old because that kid graduated last yr

"that school is reallly BAD (Clinton)"
-Who are YOU to say this?

Its part of the public school system in the Bronx and its known for having gangs and whatnot. Trust me..I live in the Bronx and a reason why I'm at Fordham prep and not a Bronx public school. The kids in the video are probably smart, but the school itself isn't good. Too many thugs outweigh those few that actually care about their future.

The segment aired on PBS in June 2004, so it had to be filmed no later than fall 2003.

Oh...then he must've graduated 2 yrs ago

"Too many thugs outweigh those few that actually care about their future."
-That is a terrible and pretentious thing to say....

Not really when its true...ask anyone around here and they'll tell you that the school is bad ...
