PE? Dance?

PE is required at Barnard for 2 semesters (I think). Can’t find this info on the website- can dance be substituted? My dau hasn’t had PE in several years due to intensive dance.

I am pretty sure there is some sort of dance class that counts as PE.

Yes, dance technique classes can definitely be substituted for PE, and in fact the college encourages this - as the PE classes are crowded and enrollment is somewhat limited.

So students are asked at the outset how they plan to fulfill their PE requirement. If they want PE, the first years are assigned a slot (either fall or spring) when they will have priority registration for the PE classes... if they want dance, then they essentially are opting out of the PE-registration sytem entirely. (Of course students can do both -- the main thing is, if they want PE other than dance, they have to let it be known).

Students cannot take dance classes for academic credit until their PE requirements have been filled, so basically for a dancer the first two technique classes taken will result in PE credit, not academic -- after that, they can take technique classes for credit; I believe it is 1 point per class. Both modern and ballet are taught at 6 different levels, and classes in other forms of dance are taught as well.

I think the way Barnard handles dance is just about the coolest thing about Barnard -- a student can take as much or as little dance as she wants, and classes are available at every level. Just about every dance class is open to nonmajors; auditions for performance classes are also open to all.

So this enables students like my daughter to continue to have dance in their lives even if they are majoring in other areas.

Ditto to what Calmom says. My D just completed her first year at Barnard. A longtime dancer who works professionally in musical theater, she plans to declare a major in behavioral neuroscience later this next year! She only "discovered" this field after taking a required science course at Barnard....

The dance technique classes are wonderful!
