Alright, so I am a freshman and last semester got 2 B's in Calc I and AP Bio. This semester I brought all my grades to an A except for AP French and....PE.
My question is, will that B in PE hurt my chances for the Ivy League/Stanford? I know I can keep A's for the rest of high school because my load this year was kinda crazy.

:-h I also got a B in gym freshman year.

From Stanford’s admissions [website](http://www.stanford.edu/dept/uga/application/freshman/transcripts.html):
The Ivy League schools are similar, but they might give more weight to freshman-year grades than Stanford does. If you got the B because you wouldn’t participate or you think gym is beneath you or something, that attitude might hurt you if it comes across in other parts of your application, but the grade itself won’t have much of an effect.

Bs in academic classes are more detrimental, but those are very advanced classes for a freshman and it looks like you’ve improved, so I don’t think those are the end of the world either. Even so, I think people who make threads about single grades are often missing the point. Stanford is the most selective university in the country, and you probably won’t get in no matter what (even if you never got any Bs in your life).

I’m hoping to also rely on the strength of my extracurriculars (I have the times of a division 3 athlete but of course, Stanford is division 1). But I won’t turn this into a chance thread!

PS: The PE grade was because of two weeks of absences. I was sick.

If you have a medical excuse, would they let you retake it?

Hmm, I can ask my teacher.

I have a similar problem. I’m afraid I can’t offer much but I’d imagine they’ll look at your B and say, “Oh well, I guess this one isn’t a recruited athlete.” I wouldn’t think they’d judge you too harshly in a non academic class. Besides, many will recalculate your GPA, which might not even extend to PE.

'kay, thanks guys!

My p.e. teacher gave me an extra 5% on my mark for volunteering to help organize gym supplies and coordinate track and field day. see if you can do that

You have to be ridiculously genius, have a special talent, invent something, or come from a unique financial situation to make it in to one of the ivy leagues. I’m sure you are really intelligent but you shouldn’t make getting in to one of those schools your ultimate goal. Honestly, you can get great jobs and work for awesome companies just from going to a state school. It will save you money and stress if you just keep doing your best and enjoying high school rather than worrying over one grade. Good luck!

B’s in PE aren’t detrimental. Some schools won’t even really look at it because PE isn’t a core class. Don’t sweat it!

Isn’t PE a participation grade mostly though? If it looks like you didn’t do well because you refused to participate… That can be a problem. But if you were sick, then you should just try to get the school to change or drop the grade.

@sayonaraa I wouldn’t consider it an ultimate goal, but I’d say it matters to me because I haven’t figured out what I want to do with my life yet. But thanks.

@mrnephew yes, I was sick and therefore absent.

Anyways, I was able to persuade my teacher to give me that A, and I think it’s time to close the thread. Thanks!

Congratulations.

Getting a B in P.E will not hurt you in the college admissions process. I don’t know how college applications work where you live or where you go to school but my school leaves out everything that’s not an academic class so colleges won’t even see the grades that I get in gym, music, etc.
