Peabody vs. BoCo vs. Eastman

Look, I have a student at Eastman and I have seen the checks…there ARE gigging opportunities for undergrads.

depends upon the major instrument, of course

BoCo is a very orchestral school. It might be a factor to consider- playing orchestral music is often a solo part for a woodwind player. Also- it is more realistic for one to expect to “try” an orchestral career.

Marjecat: I think we know each other; we spent many a weekend afternoon at SMS Curtis branch chatting? I’m so pleased and excited for your daughter! Congratulations on great results!
I went to college in Boston and love the city. If her teacher plays in the BSO, this is good training indeed. Eastman, though, is a really excellent conservatory, despite the snow, but I’m not clear on the teacher though, is she happy with the studio? Also important to consider, as others have said, are the ensembles and orchestras. I think they may be stronger overall at Eastman.

If partial answers count, I would cast my vote with UC2008 for the reasons stated. If BoCo doesn’t turn out to be the school of her dreams, she is right around the corner from a number of other schools. Boston is a vibrant city. Eastman and Peabody are very confined to one city block.

“in possession of a bluelight to combat SADD. Oh it is SUCH a good school, why can’t it be — somewhere else?” Marjecat, I just noticed this and it made me smile. Daughter #2s top choices were RIT and CIA (Cleveland), (all the top glass-blowing schools seem to be in gloomy places). She is a freshman this year, and has SADD. She took her bluelight to school. It must work because she loves her school, and is extremely happy despite the gloomy weather.

Hence the non de plume “glassharmonica”! Thanks for that comment…Spouse and I needed to hear it. So I picture D sitting in front of her blue light, doing her physical therapy exercise with her clay while the storms rage outside. Kinda romantic…

Had to comment after rediscovering this site after a year’s absence - Marjecat we have already chatted about this privately. But I must say that you should be glad that your D decided on Eastman because after having my bassoonist D attend NEC this past year, I wished SHE would have only felt safe walking from the dorm to the school (actually, at NEC that would be across the street) She spent SOOOO much money checking out all the local restaurants, shopping etc. that Boston has to offer that it was killing us. I was PRAYING that a Nor’Easter storm would sock her in for a semester! Best of luck to your daughter!

I apologize if this is not the appropriate place to post, but I remembered reading your post about this young bassoonist from Peabody. I couldn’t help but wonder if the young lady of whom you were speaking is the same one from this article. Very sad. There also was a post on the Peabody page regarding the death of this young lady.

Again, I apologize. That last post of mine was really intended for MD Mom.
