Hello all,

Is anyone familiar with MBA grads from top b-schools who matriculated straight after the peace corps (or a similar non-profit background)?

I am interested in non-profit managment, and am planning to apply to b-school with nothing more than the peace corps (but with good project management experience). I've also got a 3.6 from a top school (in poli sci) and a 760 on the gmat.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

It's a bit unusual, but your stats look good. How many years were you in the Peace Corps and what undergrad did you go to?

i went to UVA. i'll also be a first year at Johns Hopkins SAIS program in the fall, so I'm hoping to pursue a dual degree. Wharton seems out of reach, but I'm hoping I may have a good chance at Tuck. Ah, I also got a 800 on the GRE math.

I was in the peace corps for 2 years in Peru in community development, and started/managed several profitable projects for youth groups.

If you are keen on Wharton, it wouldn't hurt to apply. You definitely don't have to worry about setting yourself apart from the crowd.

The key for you, it seems, will be your "selling points" to the admissions office:
- Why do you want to get an MBA?
- What do you want to do long-term?
- How will an an MBA help you get there?

Have you thought about and already excluded Masters in Public Admin programs? There are several with good nonprofit programs.

Have you considered Johns Hopkins' MBA program? Recently a donor gave many millions of dollars to create a top MBA program.

Wharton MBA does not have the best non profit program. Better programs exist at Columbia, Northwestern, Duke, Michigan and UCLA MBAs.
