peace, social justice & service

We are looking for schools in the midwest and mideast that have a focus both in curriculum as well as in student activity around justice and peace as well as community service. Right now my D is looking at Elizabethtown, Goucher, Grinnell, Beloit, Wooster, Elmhurst, and Heidelberg. We have visited Goshen, Allegheny, Ohio Weslyan and Kenyon, but those did not connect for her.

Are there any on her "looking" list that stand out for any of you in this context or are there others you would recommend? She wants to major in pol sci and minor in music.

Thanks

connecticut college has a very cool certificate program in community action and public policy http://www.conncoll.edu/academics/centers/hollerancenter

Princeton Review has a list of "Colleges With a Conscience" and highlighted Conn as one of the nation’s best colleges for fostering social responsibility and public service.

i believe colgate offers a major in peace studies

I would strongly recommend a look at St. Olaf.

Oberlin, Wesleyan, Bard, Sarah Lawrence, Macalester, Knox...

There are numerous colleges across the country, including many well known ones, that have Peace and Conflict type majors or concentrations. My son at USC is minoring in this topic, http://www.usc.edu/dept/publications/cat2004/schools/college/peace.html. The minor requires a placement. My son combined that requirement with his major in film and interned last semster, for credit, at: http://participantproductions.com/. This semster he is volunteering at: http://www.ri.org/. Keep in mind that large schools, located in urban areas, may not be totally focused on the topic but they do offer a wider variety of courses and more interning opportunities than small lacs located in rural areas.

Here is a link for graduate programs in peace and conflict studies which may help you in finding appropopriate undergraduate colleges: http://programs.gradschools.com/usa/peace_studies.html

Googling the topic will also provide you with the names of colleges that you may be interested in.
