Can anyone tell me about the Peddie School? Is it hard to get into? I am a swimmer and how good is the swim program? Does it have good academics? Are there many boarders? Is it hard to get in as a sophomore? would they except me if i was a good swimmer?

Peddie is academically first rate. If you search around a bit you will discover that it bills itself as having one of the top high school swimming programmes in the country. I think it is about 60% boarding. Peddie in my opinions is one of the finest of the prepschools that doesn't get as much exposure on CC as it deserves. Of course they will accept you as a sophomore if your academic record is first rate and meet their requirements for citienship and character. It is a great school. Raun, don't walk to apply.

You might want to look at Mercersburg Academy as well. They have a strong swim team and have produced 23 Olympic swimming medal winners. Wow! They have a high % boarders, a large endowment, and great academics.

are the academics anything like exeter or andover?

The academics at both Peddie and Mercersburg are excellent. Exeter and Andover have stronger reputations, but all 4 schools are outstanding.
Both Peddie and M-Burg have nice campuses. Peddie's gym is beautiful.

Same with Hill, but we're not great at swimming.

peddie is definitely not top notch academically..the school i would say tier 1 academically are
the phillips, st paul, choate, deerfield, milton, hotchkiss, groton and lawrenceville

Bearcats,

I agree with not being as top notch as Andover or Exeter, but maybe the interested possible applicant is interested in Peddie other than academics.
Like casserole57 said, he/she is a good swimmer and is looking for schools with a good swimming program which Peddie definitely has. Maybe that's something casserole57 compares with schools like Andover and Exeter. Casserole57, did you look at other MAPL schools (Mercersburg, Lawreceville, Hill, Blair, and Hun)? Maybe MAPL schools is a fit to you. What are you mainly looking for in a school?

what is peddie like for ssat and stuff?I am a varsity soccer player and do crew,so do they do well in sports?

here's some info on athletics from the peddie website.

Anybody know why Peddie doesn't have a hockey program?
Certainly they have a large enough endowment to build a first class facility,
and frankly very few (NE or mid-atlantic) preps don't offer the sport.

Just curious.

Instead of a hockey rink they have an indoor lacrosse facility. It may have been a hockey rink before. I guess we were told why but I don't remember. Its been awhile

The rink, which is now the indoor lacrosse facility, and the pool were built on a swamp and were sinking. As a result, the rink was closed and the pool water can never be emptied. The previous headmaster was opposed to hockey because it smacked of elitism, so the rink was converted into an indoor sports facility and a new rink was never built. Under the previous headmaster, Peddie, despite its large endowment, was mediocre by design, but that seems to be changing under the current headmaster.

elitism............. Don't they have crew, lacrosse, or ????????

1300 posts!!! If this is a real parent (50 cats don't count) you should all take the advice with a grain of salt.

Francisouimet07, not sure I understand. Hit em straight and hit long

MAPLPARENT -- Thank you for clarifying that. Now I'm starting to understand Peddie. It met all my son's criteria on paper, but he eliminated it when we visited it. I think the aesthetics and need of refurbishment contributed to his feeling -- this from someone who is generally oblivious to aesthetics. I even drove by it trying to find it because it did not have the manicured presence that the other schools had. After the visit, I concluded that the large endowment was going towards financial aid and faculty -- not the physical plant.

Of course, just because my son didn't like it does not mean that it is not a great school. I think it is, just not the right place for him. And I think it's wonderful that they are so generous with their financial aid.

Thanks for the info -- I was just curious...

Has anyone visited the new science center at peddie? If so has this changed the landscape in a positive way. I know in the past some people including myself felt the campus needed a little scrubbing.

Mercersburg is definitely more than a match for Peddie, and as a Mercersburg graduate, I can say that the academics are definitely first rate. According to boardingschoolreview.com, Peddie's endowment is almost $70 million larger than Mercersburg's (240m to 170 m) and the acceptance rate is 23% (15% lower than Mercersburg) but despite those figures, Mercersburg offers almost twice as many APs as Peddie, offers 4 more sports than Peddie does, and has much more extracurricular activities. The faculty student ratio is also slightly smaller, and the average class size is the same.

So does Mercersburg just know how to spend its money better, or what? My theory is that if Mercersburg was located closer to a major metro area, it would be much more desireable than Peddie for sure, especially because Mercersburg is building many new facilities.
