Peddie

So, compared to GLADCHEMMS and similar schools, how "good" is it? What are their strong suits? Weak points? Any other info?

They have a large endowment, brand new science building, strong arts and athletics, diverse student body, close to Princeton U and NYC, excellent placement at nearby U PENN.

thanks, I live like 25 min. from upenn :)

bumpp… haha im kind of impatient

I Attended revisit day yesterday. I was very impressed by Peddie. The school creates a warm environment. It also appears to offer a stong education with great college placement. I was also very impressed by their new athletic facility… A great all around school. Best of all, the kids seem happy.

I heard they have very strong girls basketball, havent lost in long time.

Im revisiting tuesday… :)

We did the Peddie revisit on Thursday as well and regrettably have decided to pass. Athletic and living quarters were nice, although as a parent the idea of video games in the dorms being allowed and condoned didnt sit well with me. I also felt that the student population was much more homogeneous than diverse, as I had thought. Many of the parents and students that I encountered were local (from NJ). The kids that I did speak with seemed happy and the few seniors that I interacted with all seemed to be headed to great schools. It just didnt have the all around “fit factor” that we were seeking, although it may indeed exist for someone else. Good luck to those who decide to attend.

What do you mean by homogenous? Racial?

CMM Quote: “I also felt that the student population was much more homogeneous than diverse, as I had thought. Many of the parents and students that I encountered were local (from NJ).”

CMM: Looks like you only got to see a few people during the revisit. According to the info below from Peddie website, it is very diverse. From Peddie Website:

Enrollment – Peddie enrolls 537 young men and women in grades 9 through 12, including 8 postgraduate students. Our student body represents 22 states and the District of Columbia, as well as 29 foreign countries.

but the state and foreign country thing doesnt really tell us much. They could accept 1 student from each of the 21 states and 29 foreign countries and then accept the rest from NJ if they wanted. I am sure they wouldn’t do that but that could be a possibly unless the school specifically states how many students come from each state/country.

Peddie admits 3 or 5 kids from China each year. That’s the same as the GLAD CHEMMS.

CMM,

I do believe you are right on about fit. It seems that, deep down, you know whether a school is for your kid.

However, I do need to respond to some of your reactions to Peddie. I am a parent of a current Peddie boarder (9th grade), so I do come with that bias.

I just spoke with my d about your post. She disagrees with your comments on the use of video games. Video games in the common lounge areas are not allowed. I am not certain what you experienced on your revisit; however, my daughter has lived on campus since September, so it seems that you may experienced an anomaly.

As far as geographical diversity goes—of course—it is all in the dorms. Most of the day students do come from NJ because that is who lives nearby. My daughter has so many friends from all over the planet and US. I am having a difficult time thinking of one of her dorm friends who is from NJ. She has tons of day student friends from NJ, but I can’t remember anyone from NJ living in her dorm…

As far as cultural/racial/ethnic diversity goes, I have to give NJ credit—what a naturally nice mix of people—and the day students represent the plethora of cultures that exist in NJ. In addition, the girls that my d lives with appear to represent a very healthy mix of ethnicities and cultures. I find this to be one of the best parts of my d’s Peddie experience. She is the product of a strong, suburban school system that was overwhelmingly white and upper middle class. My d went to Peddie looking for all of the academics found in her public school, but with the addition of a diverse learning community. She got that and more.

I do work in education and I have been to the campus more than once. It was the diverse population and general happiness of the kids that made an initial impact on me. The Jersey thing is there too, and, although I am not a native, I really like it. My d is a good student and athlete, and she has found both academics and athletics to be exceptional—but in the end—it is the cool mix of kids and the great school community that makes the difference.

As you said, the fit “may indeed exist for someone else” and that someone is my d! Good luck in finding the place that works for your child!

2010 hopeful, I am totally impressed by your post. lol.

thanks???

Does anyone know if Peddie looks down on phone-interviewers or if they are of equal weight as actual visiting because I live like 5+ hours away and my parents would not like to drive.

2010 I had a phone interview and I was fine

K thanks, now I just have to find out if Lawrenceville is the same and I’ll be set.

Thinking or planning for next year?

both. I already have my main list of schools (10) and may add a few more. It is going to be much easier this year with all the experience from the previous year. I am going to be so vicious this year. It is do or die this time around.

^^^haha I think I’ll try that approach as well! And I have also been looking into Peddie, it looks like an amazing school
