Peer Competition and Your Chances

i have one question..

I have another friend from the same background who will be aplying to US We have some univ in common.
He has better marks in classes 09, 10 and boards ( by 2-3%) but our grade report for boards are equal.. AS WE HAVE GOT CONVERTED official report in grades for school.

Since he knows me.. he also has got the conversion and letter. My sat scores and EC are way better than his ( actually much much) So how will adcomm compare our application. or will they ??? Will his better school and academic record till class 10 have a negative impact for me...

However , i have better grades in class 12 which i do not want to send .. as they are good but not ___..

Since both of share the same education background. what will be the effect..

Please comment................

If you apply to top US universities, then only one of you, at best will get accepted. The extent to which they will compare you with one another when making that decision can only be answered by university adcoms.

must read for internationals??? ?? ? ... very misleading!

and for the actual ques... if your SAT scores are really "much much" higher than his, and your board marks differ by "2-3%" only, you might have an edge. but it might just all go down to your recs, essays and how you present yourself to the AOs.

in the end.. it's adcoms who decide, so no one can tell you for sure which one of you is getting in! Put together the best application you can with killer essays and hope for the best. good luck

please comment........ Ppl looking forward to your help

Does this stuff apply for even for univs.. like purdue and other high takers......please elaborate on issue

Usually in universities where competition is fierce for internationals such as the top ivies, especially when financial aid is concerned (not for HYP though), the adcoms will probably pick only one of you.. not because they have a quota or anything.. Since you guys are from the same school, it is VERY easy for them to compare you guys together, then comparing 2 people from 2 different schools. Why? because they know that you guys have had the same opportunities and they want to see which one has made the best of it.

If you both are EXCELENT candidates, of course there is a chance that both will get in.. But from your post, I think that you think you are the better applicant. If one of you WILL get in, judging only from your post (which is a very poor thing to judge on haha) I'd say you'd get in lol.

Just think of it this way:
1. they will compare you to your school's applicants.
2. They will compare you to your district's applicants.
3. They will compare you to your city's applicants.
4. They will compare you to the whole of India's applicants.

what about asia's applicants?

and to all international applicants?

not as much

not as much, imo

i think comparison is limited to regional and country basis. take princeton 2009 indians admits for an example - 4 admits - i from calcutta, delhi, bombay and banglore each

coincidence? i think not...

also, you got to take into consideration that your 'city of joy' produces a lot of stellar applicants with perfect SATs, etc. because of the education oriented culture...

smart mind,
So are you sending your results only up to last year's? Are you applying to any of the Ivies? I'm thinking of doing the same thing, i'm actually doing my first year of pre-U( i've completed my official high school education) but really wish to concentrate only on the SATs.In fact i do not even feel like taking my school exam. But i fear not having impressive results this year will hurt my chances, please advise...

No way they dont care to see........
You have to give in your application an explanation of what you did after high school( do include some cool stuff like Ecs and community service). The academic part wil be done with results upto previous years. Those are more than enough for any indian applicant. Your board results will be most imp. then school results for class rank and then other academics. Along with this ECS and reco.. school results are only for ranks and relative calculations......

dont worry ..concentrate on sats .... coz i know it that other than HYMP... and few others.... sat I and II serve as a major cutoff factor..... do well and have an advantage........go bad and be left out...

whats a good 12th percentage for CBSE candidates(those who have already passed this year and will apply for fall 2006)?mine 10th marks was 88.2% from ICSE... 12th was 75.25%(best of four) and 72%(out of all 5 subjects)...

ronty007 though i may not be quite in a position to comment..... what i would say here is that you try to sort of express your appl. strongly in other areas with consistent achievement. Coz there is a significant decrease in percentage. Also the adcoms will not see best of four . they evaluate on the basis of all exam subjects you have taken. So 72%. That is pretty average, so no advantage there.........

Think it this way... if you are a adcomm member... and have 100 app from indiA.. there are ones having stelar grades, sat and others.. some with average sat, good grades .. some with gud extras but average grades... and some with everything average....

what do you do.....
Select the best...then
Select the ones who show commitment to any one area...
keep aside the average....

So if your grades are average... focus on remaining part.. also a lot depends on where you apply... remeber with gud sat scores some part of your Grade 12 at middle tier colleges will be compensated...

Think abt it... decide yourself...from the adcomm view.. and you will get the answer.. no 2+2=4 rule here. .. all relative ..final impression counts.....

Hope this helps... Do reply for further queries.. i sure have done a lot of research..
Ankur

90+ is good

exactly....... 90 + on any scale is very gud... but dont be disappointed... many other areas important and crucial come your way......

I gave my x'ams from WB state board and got 82 % but got it converted with aid from USEFI and school principal.. it came down to a CBSE equivalent of 87%

So things can change in quickly...

you better sign a bloodpact or something with ur buddy before you guys get back your admission letters.

LOL Joe :p

thank you smartmind...
I was thinking about that tooo...

i need replies and assessments guys.. ppl here shud help each other
