Hey CCers, how much pressure is there in college to engage in drugs and alcohol nowadays? If there is any pressure do any of you wish that you'd attended a college close to home so on the weekends you could escape? I've heard a lot on the topic lately and just wanted some other perspective.
Thanxs

At most colleges, you won't feel too pressured to do anything you don't want to do.

It would be easier for people to respond if you listed the names of the schools you are interested in, since culture varies a lot.

it's nto peer pressure...it's just your turn

Peer pressure is hyped up a lot. They started telling us in 5th grade just how pressured we'd be to try drugs and alcohol in middle/high school. I've never felt pressured to do anything I don't want to do. In fact, if you choose not to drink one night, kids adore you; you can be DD. I'm sure that if you don't want to drink, you can find plenty of friends who feel the same way. I doubt anyone will bother you much about drinking.

I wouldn't say there is "peer" pressure, but there is social pressure. Nobody is going to hand you a beer or joint and make you drink it, or hastle you if you refuse, but when everyone around you is drinking, one may feel like giving in to society's temptations.

For some college students, it is the first time that they can drink and party without supervision, and they go crazy. For many others, they had the opportunity to do it in high school and they're more relaxed about going out, and value a night in with a movie or a bunch of sober friends.

I also think that the way a kind is brought up is the way he/she will live his or her life. We still leave chances for those who change in college but often if you desire to stick to what you know is right, no matter how much pressure you get you won't budge.
Another thing I think is that if you know why you are going to college and you want to abide by that reason, you would find out that the kind of people that you get close to won't be the ones that would try to put you under unwanted pressure.

Perhaps.... if you havent already.... you could seriously research in depth... alcohol...and all the major drugs.... and learn much about them.. and I'm sure that will greatly help you make the "right" decisions. You wont be making them on what your friends tell you....("oh, one time cant hurt")..or what your parents tell you ("drugs wont get you anywhere.. etc etc") but on the knowledge you yourself have acquired.
