Peer Rec

Hey guys,

I'm thinking about asking my sister to write the peer rec for me. Do you think that this is risky (would the admissions committee think it to be an act of desperation)?

I could have my best friend write it, but I just think that my sister knows me better and will be able to write a better peer rec.

I don’t think it matters much / who writes it for you. Dartmouth doesn’t seem to weight it that heavily. just my two cents.

Younger sister or older sister?

I’m not sure what value a peer rec has anyway, to be truthful. Your best friend will have her own applications to fill out, her own essays to write–and now she’s got to write a recommendation for you too?

My D had her older sister write her peer rec. She got in.

I had my friend write my peer rec, and it turned out very nice (he’s one of those naturally epic writers…). But to be honest, I don’t think it will matter. I think they read it, but not that they really care too much about it.

I had a friend do mine as well. He’s really got a good sense of humor and is a great writer to boot. I think it may have helped tip it in my favor. Got in and a likely as well.

I’m curious about why everyone thinks they don’t pay attention to it.

I’f they don’t want the information, why ask for it? Why not ask for another essay from the student?

I never sent mine in. The admissions office says that they still consider your application complete without it. Dartmouth Class of 2013 btw.

@consolation: for that reason ^^^

Plus I went to an admissions workshop that the college itself put on, and they basically said it’s to give a more personal view of you than your teacher recs, but is essentially not going to make or break you at all.

Older, but it seems from the general consensus that the peer rec really doesn’t play a significant role.

Just because it doesn’t play a significant role doesn’t mean that it plays no role at all. But one isn’t going to go from the reject pile to likely letter because of a peer review letter.

BartleDoo,

I had my older brother send it in, and I got in just fine
I had my brother write it for the exact same reason – he knew me better than anyone else, even though he wasn’t the best of the writers.

From what I hear, Dartmouth doesn’t really care all that much about the peer rec. Kids were getting in via likely letter before even sending them in. Perhaps in a borderline decision they might make a difference though.
