peer rec?

Just how integral is the peer recommendation in the application process to Dartmouth? Does the admissions department hold these recs to be as important as the teacher ones?

I don't know...but I sure hope my friend did a good job.

I think my friend is uncomfortable with writing the longer statement on the back, even though he was totally eager to be the person who did it. I don't know what's going to happen, but I told him, if he'd rather not do it, he can just give it back.

Because Dartmouth looks at the whole person, the peer rec is important, because smart people are a dime a dozen. They really put a lot into building their community which really comes across when you meet people on campus so I do think they want to know what your friends think of you.

Quick Question: What if the peer you're recommending is applying to Dartmouth too? We both decided to ask the other before we found out we were both applying!

Then you have to trust each other to be honest. Or find someone else. I've read about people who were both applying who did each other's peer review, and it turned out fine.

Oh yeah, we trust each other, I just didn't know if the admissions people might think it was odd or something.

Actually, if both letters are good, it will be even better for both of you because they'll think, "Wow... these two students are competing for admission and they're STILL friends. Good sports."

To answer your first question, the peer recs aren't nearly as important as the teacher recs. And if your friend doesn't do a great job, it really won't hurt you. There's only been one time in Dartmout history where a person didn't get in because of a peer rec; the person wrote something along the lines of, "This person is a huge jerk and has no idea who his real friends are." As long as they make some kind of effort it's fine. They just like to hear a friend's perspective.

"This person is a huge jerk and has no idea who his real friends are."

thats really really really really sad and depressing.

well, if i remember correctly, the guy really was a jerk who had used his status to condone the major offences of some of his jerk-y friends.
