Peer Recommendation!!

Are Peer Recommendations mandatory for Dartmouth. I'm extremely worried. I sent in my application without one. Could I ask a friend of mine to write me one and mail it in? I mean, I already sent in three teacher recs. All of them are written VERY well. Ugh, I'm so stressed out.

It can be an important part of your application. Aside from that, it shows your ability to follow simple directions. I would have a close friend write something and send it in.

The peer recommendation is required. It really is Dartmouth's only substantive supplement to the common app. I think its absence would be highly noticeable. I'd call admissions right away to let them know you'll be getting it in as soon as possible.

uhh...isnt the peer rec supposed to be mailed in separately anyway?

I was primarily addressing the original question: Are peer recommendations mandatory for Dartmouth. However, If you can sort things out over the next few days and can find a friend in town and willing to do some writing on your behalf and submit by the first, you're set. Your peer can simply send his separate mailing when he is through. However, if you don't think your peer will make the RD deadline for "all" materials, that's when I'd call. I imagine the deadline for peer recommendations in more flexible anyway since when the rec is actually mailed is beyond the direct control of the applicant.

yes...i think the peer evaluation is so ridiculous...sry.

How long should it be?

Download the pdf. Create text fields specifying #12 font size. Have your friend email you the three responses (two short, one long). Cut and paste onto pdf. Print and mail. The pdf file and default helvetica font make for a nice presentation.

how do you create a text field? and should my friend put the return address of his home?

yeah! I can't figure out how to put in a text field. Also, should the first two short responses be like 1-2 sentences in length?

I think you should try the following, Download the peer rec as a pdg file on your desktop. Also open a bland work document.

Click the select text buttion then highlight each section. Go to edit, copy. Paste the selected text into the workd document. you can space accordingly.

is it ok if the peer rec is kinda late?

The there is a due date on the REC form for the peer recommendation, you should have your recommender submit it by the due date. While many will tell you that the school will wink if it is a little late, remember that they are under no obligation to accept materials submitted after the deadlien especially considering the fact that there will be about 10,000 applications for RD

My peer sent the rec before I could give her the envelope. I owe her 37c! (Darn peer, taking so much initiative...)

So, did you tell your peer what to write? I mean, not explicitly: "Oh, yes, write that I was captain of the Varsity softball team until I broke my right femur, at which point..." but generally: "Maybe you could write about some aspect of my volunteering that we do together," or did they ask? I just told my peer what I put on my app and asked her to basically write something to complement it, or provide another view.

If you go the pdf route, open the pdf file. Click on Tools. Click on advanced editing. Click on text field tool. A rectangular box shows up. Go to the middle of each side of the box. A double line shows up. Drag and shape the box as you wish over the lined space on the pdf. Double click inside the box for a drop down menu that allows you to specify the font and font size under appearance. In the long response space, do the same thing. Then click on the options menu in the dropdown and check multiline. Close dropdown menu. Click select on the pdf and you're good to go. Then simply cut and paste stuff onto pdf. Yes, two sentences will suffice for the short responses. Put friend's return address on envelope.

Ravenna
my peer actually asked me "what do u want me to emphasize on ur rec"
and i just told him "talk about this and this". i told him really general events and i hope he did a good job!! :P

I wrote a peer rec for a friend who is applying RD to Dartmouth. It was about a page in length (12 pt font, single spaced). She gave me her brag sheet and I wrote about some personal annecdotes that emphasized what she had on her brag sheet. I mailed it in and I hope she gets in. I think the peer rec is a great way for the University to get a candid evaluation and another perspective of the candidate. I wish there are more universities that require this.

Hi, I had a good friend of mine write my peer rec like way back in Sept. But I was having second thoughts about Dartmouth this Dec. (my parents limited the number of schools I could apply to) so I asked her to hold off. But now, she's in a different country for like a month b/c of a family crisis! And I can't contact her. Um...I have no idea what to do. Help!

You don't have her email? Let Dart know that your buddy is out of the country and the eval will be sent as soon as she's back.

Or get another buddy to do it....
