Peer reputation skews rankings? OK-here are USNWR rankings w/ peer assessment removed

I can see where your “slacker son” gets his sense of humor (or lack thereof).

lol no disrespecting PEOPLE, just trying to express my opinion here~

waitatshu, instead of making random claims, please back up your opinion that Cornell should be ranked higher than JHU, Northwestern etc. Why do you say this? If your only reason is that it is an “Ivy League”, you are sadly going to not convince anyone.

I always knew it was HPYPC, not HYPSM!

Cornell would be ranked higher if you took only their Arts and Sciences and Engineering schools into consideration (as is the case with most other colleges). Arts and Sciences is about as selective as Dartmouth. Engineering is about as selective as MIT.

Getting back to the main point of this thread…
PA doesn’t really make much difference in the US News rankings. That’s what I take away from it.

alam1, once again this is just my opinion, no need to start anything here

waitatshu, I’m sorry if you feel I’m trying to start something. That is not my intention. Everybody has reasons for thinking a particular school is better than some other schools. I , for example, would like to think that Emory, while not as selective as Dartmouth, provides a comparable quality of education. I may be wrong but I can try and back up my argument with class size data, survey data etc. I sincerely was curious to know why you thought Cornell was better than the schools you mentioned. If I were to guess, I would say it has something to do with the fact that you go to Cornell but I would give you the benefit of the doubt there. Lastly, please don’t think I am trying to start an internet quarrel since that is not my intention.

]

Uh-oh, dems fightin’ words on cc. :D

Best line on cc in awhile!

lol alright, well for a few reasons

1) Cornell CAS, hotel admin, argriculture, engineering/architecture are extremely strong
2) Cornell has a bigger alum network worldwide
3) Cornell is still very selective consider the fact that it’s quite big

and I would love to hear prodigalson’s reasons for his claim too

If you think the name on the parchment of your “degree” wins you anything but superficial friends, and instantly transforms you into something or someone other than who you really are inside your brain and your heart and your soul, guess again people.

Right now, I am praying for the souls of the Lynn University students who died in the Hotel Montana (presumed dead) collapse in Port au Prince, Haiti. They were true winners in my book.

Think about that people and then think about the inanity of this thread and any other ranking obsessed thread on CC.

And I am no bleeding heart liberal.

Quote:
“u see, at least ppl in Asia know bout Cornell, I haven’t even heard of Brown and Dartmouth before I moved to the US lol”

CC Board should be renamed Asia CC Board :)

lol yea i admit that was pretty random~

I find it hard to believe that Berkeley doesn’t plummet 10 spots when its ridiculously high P.A. score is eliminated from the equation.

Why doesn’t it suffer the same blow that top publics like Michigan and UVA do?

The differences between two, three and four places can be quite small, and the differences in overall score between a school and those ranked just above and below it vary. But in general, the USNWR objective criteria favor schools with high student stats, low student turnover, and low faculty-to-student ratios - in other words, selective private schools. The peer assessment score weighted at 25% seems to be a pretty reasonable counterbalance to give outstanding large public universities their due, since those schools are obliged by virtue of their missions to admit a wider range and larger number of applicants.

lol sorry for going off topic again,
but I want to dedicate this to prodigalson

Heh…wishful thinking, eh, bud?

Because it’s the best top public… ;)

sigh Well, at least it’s where it belongs: behind CMU and Georgetown.

I would have looked forward to RML’s reaction.

^ Haha…your East coast bias is showing. ;)
