Pegram and No A/C

hey, i just wanna know about Pegram.. like size/location/and anyother gosship stuffs. is pegram going to be an performing art community building or just a floor or two?

also how hot or cold does duke/durham gets (including a possibilty of summer classes)??

thanks :D

I think it can get pretty chilly in the winter and it even snows(though rarely). As for the ac stuff, I got a medical waiver so I can get the best of both worlds, big dorm room and ac. I wouldnt want to stay in duke over the summer though, it gets HOT!

Pegram is the best dorm on East Campus...no wait, all of Duke. I think I'm a little biased cause I lived there last year but it really is a great dorm. It really did have great unity. There were always people hanging out in the commons room (which you pass on your way in and out of the dorm) or other people's rooms. We got a catchy slogan "Can't spell pregame without Pegram" (that gets old quickly though). We're relatively close to the Marketplace but it is a deceivingly long walk to the busstop. The busses seem to taunt you when you leave the dorm and see them waiting there at the busstop (odds are you aren't making that bus). I recommend memorizing the bus schedules (specifically C-2's and C-3's) and give yourself 3 or 4 minutes to get to the busstop. Dorm sizes were all right. Mine wasn't very big but I didn't care that much. I haven't heard about the performing art thing, that might be new. Anyway, Pegram really is a great dorm and we loved it last year. Bluestar7 will definitely agree.

BTW the campus bus schedule is https://aux03.auxserv.duke.edu/parking/busschedules/campusbusschedules.htm Get a feel for it before you go to Duke.

thanks, Duke 25!! was it ohkay not to have a/c (esp during summer)??

also i wanna know how much space is under a bed.
i'll bring two (traveling) suit cases and i hope i can put them under my bed.
(i think 30cm would be enough but yeah ...)

AAAAH Pegram!!!!
I miss Pegram SOOOOOOOO much.

(and that's generally the response you get from past Pegram residents)

I lucked out w/ AC b/c roomie has allergies. Honestly-- keep fans on in your room at all times. It feels fine. I agree with the bus stop-- you have to tack on a few minutes extra travel time to get to class (and I needed to add on like 10+ minutes because it's inevitable to run into people you know and want to say hi to on your way from Pegram to the bus or to a class on the other end of East... that and I always seemed to get on the bus that makes all the stops along Campus Dr when I'm running late).

My dorm was on the third floor so it had a bit of a weird shape, but it just felt very cozy and could accomodate the bunches of people who'd hang out. Pegram bonded very, very early on in our year. There were ALWAYS people in the common room-- I remember we had a pajama party one of the first nights of classes. We'd go out to parties as a herd of 20+ people screaming P2 and Pegram and all sorts of things.

I heard that it's not the entire dorm that's in that performance thingy.

You'll definitely be able to fit suitcases underneath your bed. My roommate and I each had "bed elevators" to raise the bed and give us more room to store large bins and suitcases and stuff.

oh uh.. i have asthma.. can i get a/c??.. really?? (like will duke put an ac just in my dorm room??)

how is parking at pegram?
also do all beds have that "elevators" thingy?

thanks so much for a reply!

You probably could get an air conditioning put in if you have asthma. Show a doctors note when you get down there I guess. Otherwise, I survived pretty well with just fans. Parking at Pegram is very good. I didnt have a car but the red parking lot is basically right behind the dorm. Yeah, get those bed raisers at like linens and things one day. They help a lot with storing things under your bed. I fit my suitcases under it. Enjoy.

There is a special form to fill out to request AC if you have a medical condition requiring it. The doctor has to document your past health problems and sign the form. It should be submitted ASAP because they install the window units before you move in. There is an extra cost each semester, but it is well worth it!

Yeah if you have asthma you're definitely entitled to get AC -- get the form and have your doctor fax forms over ASAP. It may be too tight to get one installed before you move in, but if it gets approved, they'll do it soon after.

Parking at Pegram is amazing. There's a lot immediately behind the dorm & if it fills up, there's a lot of parking by the music building which is also behind Pegram.
