Pell grant issue

Okay I apologize in advanceif this is posted in the wrong section. I went to spartan school of aeronautics for two weeks and I properly withdrew from the class essay and the whole nine yards. So a little back story I owed them money and I paid off that debt and got a your good letter in the mail well about six months later they are saying that I owe them even more money turns out they accepted a pill grant after the fact that I already withdrew from the class and are charging me to pay them back for that amount of the pell grant and now three years later they are holding my transcript and preventing me to further myself and my future and we’ll being for there ness up. Is that even legal to accept a pell grant after I properly withdrew from the class?

You need to contact the school.

Did you have a bill that was outstanding? What was the refund policy? 100% or something else?

I’ve tried contacting the school but they can’t even give me a clear answer I ask why they accepted a grant after I withdrew from the class and all I get out of them is I don’t know it shouldn’t have happened and my only outstanding bill I had with them was the drop out fee and books and tuition fee which I paid off.

Do you have the letter stating that you were all paid up and didn’t owe them anything?

Somewhere I do but it just doesn’t make sense are they allowed to take pell grants after a student has withdrawn from school and wouldn’t it be the schools responsibility to report it to federal government seeing as how they handle all money aspects?

You would have had to sign for the Pell grant. You need to request a copy of the signature form that showed the Pell.

Are you saying that you were never given that Pell Grant money? If not, what did the school DO with that money? Did the school spend it themselves?

@kelsmom

It is a 4 profit college where the tuition is $16,000 or 8k a semester. Any Pell you would have received would have been applied to your cost of attendance.

their refund policy

When you withdrew, how much was credited back? How much did they say you owed?

Pell is an entitlement, so if there was a valid FAFSA on file, it had to be paid to the student’s account (even if it didn’t get paid until after the student withdrew). What is confusing to me here is that you say you paid them everything you owed them … THEN they got money from your Pell grant. If this is truly the case, they should have paid the amount of Pell you earned in those two weeks to you … and they should have returned the rest to the Department of Education.

I am wondering about the timeline for all of this, though. Maybe you did already have the Pell grant on your account before you got the “you’re good” letter … and maybe the school did the Return of Title IV Funds calculation after that. They are supposed to do it within a certain time period after you withdraw, but regardless of when it is done, they have to do it … and maybe the “you’re good” letter included full Pell but then a portion had to be returned when the R2T4 was done … leaving you owing the school for the difference between the Pell you received and the Pell you were allowed to keep.

If you are absolutely certain you paid off all of your charges BEFORE your Pell grant was applied? It’s really important for you to figure that out.
