OK so I am only getting half of my pell grant. I know why, so that isn't the question. Waitlisted courses don't count towards it(I have 8 units waitlisted) so I am only technically enrolled in 8 units.

I am #1 on the waitlist in both classes so I am going to get in. My question is once I do, and then I'll be registered for 16 units, will the school then deposit my other half of the pell grant into my account? Or will I lose it because I am "past" the deadline?

I would just drop one of the waitlisted and sign up for an open class but I need the courses I am waitlisted in.

I’m not sure of the answer to your question, but why not sign up for an open class so you’re registered for a full course load, and then drop it when you get into one of the wait-listed classes?

Because apparently while waitlisted courses don’t count for financial aid, they do count for my unit cap. So I am at my max right now and can’t sign up for another open class without dropping a waitlisted course.

How that makes sense to my school I don’t know. It should be consistent but whatever.

Ah… Well, I guess the thing to do is call them and ask them what happens to your Pell once you are registered full-time. I imagine they’ll just recalculate it and apply it to your account, but you could call and check on that.

Has your semester begun? If not, I would guess the grant will pro-rate upward when you are registered in the class. Ask your financial aid office to be sure.

Where I work, we do not increase aid for hours registered after the drop/add lock date. If there is evidence that the student began attending the class before the lock date & just couldn’t get registered (for example, the professor had to get the okay for over-enrollment), we can make exceptions. We require documentation, though, because we are using professional judgment to make an exception to our policy.

My quarter doesn’t start until Jan 3rd. I definitely will be enrolled in at least 12 units by the add/drop date. Either the professors will give me an add code or if there is not space I’ll drop the wait listed and sign up for whatever open course I can find to get to 12.

Do you think if I am enrolled in 12 before the add/drop date I’ll be fine to get my other half? I’ll ask them still but thanks for your help.

The computer system we use automatically updates the Pell payment when classes are added & dropped until the drop/add lock date is reached. Other schools I am familiar with do the same. Each school has a policy regarding when aid hours are locked in … so your school could have a different policy. As long as you are officially registered in the hours before the date on which hours are locked per your school’s financial aid enrollment policy, you should be able to get the increased Pell payment. I never say “you will,” because I don’t know that for sure … but the chance is good, I would say.
