Pell Grant Question

So when I log in to my secure app it informs me that I have been awarded $2,675 for the summer term. I was really happy because I figured I would be able to pay for everything w/o loans and have money left over. Unfortunately I was reading the Award Amounts info tab and saw that it said "Federal Pell Grant may be pro-rated for less than 12 credit enrollment."

Does this mean that my pell grant will be cut in half since I am only doing 6 hours? I know that 6 hours is full time for summer school so I was pretty confused. This is my first time in college if that info is of any use. Can anyone shed some light? Thanks!

Is this the second Pell grant you’ve received for 09/10? Beginning this year, students can be awarded a second Pell grant within an academic year but the rules are different than for the first award…and kind of confusing. If this is a second Pell (your school treats summer as part of the 09/10 year and you received a full Pell of $5350 already for fall/spring), then you’re probably receiving a second award. When you say that 6 hours is considered full time for summer, are you absolutely sure? Most schools have several summer sessions and treat all of them, combined, as one semester…so, full time is whatever they normally consider it to be, ie. 12 hours/semester. I think it’s likely that you will receive a half-time award, or $1337, but you can email your FA office to find out for sure. Btw, if you were an ACG eligible freshman for 09/10 and have a gpa of at least 3.0, you may be able to request a portion of that grant be awarded for summer too if needed.

If you have questions on second Pell grants, you might want to search this forum for “Summer Pell” posts by kelsmom…I think she’s the only one who truly “gets it”!

No this is the first pell I have ever received. Also, I am only attending Summer C session (6 Weeks).

Pell grants are pro-rated based on enrollment as follows: 12+=100% of the semester award; 9-11=75%; 6-8=50%; 1-5=25%. It doesn’t matter if your school considers 6 credits full time for summer … the payments are based on these credit levels.

If the student has already received 100% of the annual award, there is no Pell for fewer than 6 credits. If the student is in the upper ranges of the Pell EFC, there may be no payment at all for fewer than 12 credits (it’s important to look at the Pell schedule if your EFC is in the upper 4000’s).

OP, if you are taking 6 credits, you will only receive $1337.
