What was the cutoff for the EFC this year? Estimate on AGI? Anybody with a 45-46k income make it?

My parents had an income around $43k last year, and I got one. This probably doesn't help too much ;). What is the usual cut-off?

I read that last year it was an EFC of $3850... but didnt Bush claim they would make it "more available".... even if they did cut down on the size of the grant per student?

What I'm really wondering is what that EFC translates into for AGI...

BTW: What was your EFC?

Woah. I cleared the Pell Grant qualification with flying colors. I had an EFC of $875.

Interesting... I think your case was pretty unique..... most people around 30k have a higher EFC than that..

Theonekid:

Do I remember correctly that you got into Stanford? and that your AGI is around $40-45k? I believe that Stanford recently announced that it will give a full ride to students in your situation, if that is correct.

TOK, you cannot get a conclusive EFC based on the AGI solely. There are a number of factors that contribute to the EFC. Your best bet is to use an EFC calculator or use one the government guides that allows to build your own calculator. :)

marite,

Correcet, but I am not sure what my final AGI will be.... it seems to have increased by ~60% from last year.. but I'm not seeing any "results"... as in.. standard of living... =-/

Welcome to the world of working adults!!

So for this year, what is the EFC cut off for the pell grant (3850 or 3800)?

I'm not sure that there is a cutoff. My EFC is $5600, but apparently we will be eligible for a Pell grant at my daughter's school if my son is also enrolled in college full time. It has something to do with my tax situation - apparently I paid a disproportionate amount of state taxes in 2005 compared with my income for that year, so I guess Pell has a formula that allows certain write-offs to income and can produce some unexpected results.

I'm not convinced there is a cutoff. I got a Pell at one school, but not at another, for the same EFC for a generally similar family contribution (I think our EFC was 5200 or so with a 50k annual income, with 8-10k from the family on each FinAid award).

Interesting... but then again... I'm worried about the Gates Scholarship.. I'm assuming they go by the FAFSA SAR report numbers...

Here is the problem.... since I dont have the latest tax returns.. I will not know my real EFC until after April 15..... and Gates is requesting all our info by April 7th. In order to qualify for the Gates Scholarship... you need to qualify for a pell grant... so this is a pretty big problem =-(.

I guess the best I can do is to send them the SAR report with the estimated numbers for 2005 =-/

Go ahead and apply for the Gates scholarship. It is not your problem to worry about whether you qualify, as long as you have a reasonable belief that you might. The committee that awards the scholarships will make the appropriate decision -- I'm sure it is very common of them to have applicants who are unsure of whether they will qualify.
