penalized for submitting deposit? lets see...

interesting point was brought up by a friend of mine and im curious as to what the concensus is. i applied to umich very early in the season and was accepted, and was told there is no down side to putting in a deposit other than just losing the $200 so i did, thinking it might help with housing. i'm OOS, and my statistics are high above the umich average (1500/1600) as is my class rank (top 1% in big public school). my friend with similar but lesser numbers from my school was also accepted, and didnt put down his deposit. however, he was offered 10k a year in scholarship money, and i wasnt. keep in mind my numbers and activities are comprable, but probably better, and i had very solid recommendations. do you think its likely that i wasnt offered money b.c. i already put down the deposit, indicating that im going, and he was because they were unsure of if he'd go or not?

No. It's likely they saw something special in your friend and wanted to encourage him to attend. Stats aren't everything.

Are you a Ross pre-admit candidate? Or ENgineering? If so, it's possible that the scholarship was for a different school/major etc......

i am a ross pre-admit candidate, but so is he....i was told it was just a general scholarship he was offered. not much i can do now, i just found that peculiar

if he got 10K, how much is that around??

I totally agree that you got screwed for paying the deposit early

see what that scholarship was for.

my friend got a $40,00 scholarship for four years (10,000/year...same scholarship probably) and my stats were slightly better but her scholarship depended more on her stats w/ SES level, geographic area, etc.

same part of town, both white with enough income where we wouldnt need financial aid....maybe ill give a call to the school, just ask. can't hurt

Should you pay the deposit even if you may not go to UM

you probably shouldn't ask, don't risk screwing your friend over. Its not like they're gonna go "Ok, we'll give you money too! just to be fair!"

How do you find out about scholarships? They notify you?

I don't think they consider whether or not you deposited when they award scholarships.

For one thing, plenty of people are willing to walk away from the deposit $$, so U-M knows that your deposit is no guarantee that they can confidently overlook you for a merit award.

Because of the various factors that go into making scholarship decisions, especially at the unit level, it's pretty hard for outsiders to compare two candidates' test scores and GPAs and say which will get an award.

was the scholarship he got called 'the michigan tradition award'? i got that they give it to people who are 'culturally diverse'.

i doubt that was it then because he's white from the northeast, hardly a underrepresented group

WTR008. I dont get it, i want that scholarship SO bad & i am culturally diverse. Thata is the scholarship I was talking about earlier. me & a friend are on the same playing field and she got called for the scholarship, but not me. SO i guess that puts me almost in the same boat as tennis89...WHY DIDNT I get the same scholarship. I plan on calling my admission counselor and asking her what I needed to qualify & if they will give out anymore of those scholarships and if i am eligible. tennis89, I suggest you asking the same thing and possibly anonousmosly (sp?) talking about your friend & asking why werent you qualified?...only bring up your friend and the deposit as a last resort.

maybe its random. they cant give it to everyone. maybe they liked something about the other applicant a little more?

I can tell you right now that everyone is automatically considered for the award. Don't mean to be blunt, but her essays were probably just better than yours.
