What do I do if my tuition is due today and my financial aid status still says "pending"?

Are you in binding early decision or a transfer student? If so, I’d ask for a delay until the college can give you a FA decision.

For other incoming first year students, a college is not supposed to require any commitment until May 1.

Are you a current student? If so, you should call the financial aid office to make sure every thing is complete on your end. (I’m guessing that your U knows that a loan/ pell grant/ scholarship money is coming, but hasn’t received it yet).

Definitely call the financial aid office and ask how much needs to be paid to keep you in good standing. Does your college offer a payment plan? If so, you might be able to divide your payments into several months. Make the first payment and then ensure that your finaid is reflected before the next month and adjust the remaining payments accordingly if you can’t reflect those in your initial payment. This happens every once in awhile for my S1 - the finaid dollars aren’t reflected on the statement until alittle bit after the payment is due. This all assumes you have been AWARDED and notified of finaid and are simply waiting for the monies to be reflected in your statement.

Take a look at the on-line information – at D’s college, charges are due before the term starts, but financial aid shows as “pending” until the first day of the semester, and any loans might not disburse for a few days after that. However, her school also posts information that students with pending financial aid are not responsible for paying the amount expected to be paid with financial aid, and those students have an extended deadline – something like February 7th – to pay any deficiencies.
