Penn CAS rising sophomore, no relevant experience

I entered college believing with certainty that I would follow the pre-med track. It wasn’t until this summer that I truly was able to reflect on how I did not enjoy what I was doing and could not see myself having a career in medicine. Economics is my alternative major, with interest in a financial sector job. I have looked into several possibilities and was drawn to investment banking, which unfortunately appears to be among the most competitive of areas. However, my freshman year was dominated by science courses since at the time, I had thought it was a good idea to get a head start in completing the MCAT-required courses. This summer, I still have obligations to finish my research, and it seems too late for any realistic possibility of beginning an internship, let alone even finding one.

I’d like to ask for opinions on whether investment banking is still a feasible option for me at this point. I’ve noted how Wharton freshman have already begun internships this summer. Therefore, in terms of work experience, I will already be a year behind and at a competitive disadvantage. Also, I have heard Penn CAS may be overshadowed by Wharton when recruiters visit the campus. I’ve checked the career surveys for CAS versus Wharton, and the prospects for me as a student in the former seems quite bleak.

My question is whether there is a way for me to catch up? If it is not too late for me, how can I strengthen my resume enough so that I too can become a competitive candidate for the Wall Street firms that my Wharton peers are also aiming for?

I appreciate all insight. For tonight, I cannot stay around too long and will also check back tomorrow
