*Penn Class of 2020 Early Decision Discussion*

I just answer with extremely vague answers, for example, I did well on the ACT :stuck_out_tongue:
I like watching them get extremely angry that I wonā€™t share my private information with them

Only one applying in a grade with 1000+ kids

Lucky you @toffys
What region of the country are you applying from?

Just got contacted this evening for my interview. Set the date for this weekend. Iā€™m the only ED applicant from my school.

Still havenā€™t been contacted for an interview. Is that weird?

Good Luck @VaishS

Just curious here, but how many of you are actually expecting to get in to Penn?

Is that bad to have many people from the same school apllying, How could that disadvantage me?

@Sharecentury Penn has expressly stated that they have no limit on how many they accept from each school.

So why are ppl on this thread saying they are unlucky for having many people from their school applying early?

@emilyskates Donā€™t worry I still havenā€™t either.
@richardshaw This is going to seem a bit cocky, but I give myself a coin flipā€™s odds of getting in. Iā€™m a legacy applicant, which means there is already a 40-45% acceptance rate for those who apply ED and have legacy. But I do think that I did a solid application, and if essays are more important than they appear, I like my odds even more. Also, I think my major interests are unique (philosophy, law, history, and archaeology) and I have a sort of unique backstory. Also, the major Iā€™m applying to is in CAS and isnā€™t ridiculously competitive. I would give myself lower odds if I was applying to Wharton.

Well, a couple of reasons: First, while there is no limit to how many they accept from a school, there is a limit to how many they accept, and every person who applies is competition. Second, suppose that oneā€™s classmate gets in, but one does not: while it should not be embarrassing, it could be construed as such.

@Sharecentury Because everyone knows that while a school may say that, they also want diversity. Otherwise, they would just accept people from the top prep schools. While they may say it, I certainly do believe they have approximate quotas (maybe not by school, but likely by state). I mean, the numbers of people going to Penn from each state every year is relatively consistent. That can harm someone like me, for example, where as a student from MA, they accept ~60-70 kids a year, but this year, 9 kids from my school applied ED to Penn.

I think I have about 2% chance, its just a crap-shoot. Iā€™ve always liked Penn @richardshaw

@VaishS There is an ED acceptance rate of 24-25% and you give yourself a 2% chance??? You are more than qualified. You are selling yourself short. Everyone here has at least the national average odds of ED acceptance. Perhaps, youā€™re trying for a more competitive degree (LSM is ridiculously competitive), but did you select CAS or Wharton as a singe-choice option? If you did, you have as good of a chance as anyone.

But it isnā€™t the same 24-25% for everyone. For example, someone with a 22 ACT and bad GPA could have a 0% chance, while a legacy app with good stats and good essays like yours has about an 80-90% chance

Idk I just think that having a good ACT doesnā€™t do much anymore, its more about what the college needs and how you can fulfill it. Plus I have some holes even in my basic stats (couple Bs)

I just donā€™t think my app has anything competitive that would make Penn want me

And yeah, I did select CAS for my 2nd option (still ED)

And I agree with @jarrett211 even if they donā€™t say that they only pick a certain number from a school, it just logically makes sense. They want different ideas and thinking brought to the table, and people who all went to the same school in the same state and had the same experiences canā€™t really provide that. Sometimes you have to think past what the colleges say (another example of this is when a college says something is optional- you should still do it in most cases)

@VaishS I still think youā€™re selling yourself short. Over the course of high school, Iā€™ve gotten one B and 3 B+. I actually have worse numbers than you if I remember correctly (2220 SAT and a 3.82 UW/4.62 W GPA). If you are 4th in your class of 375, two Bā€™s is obviously quite good. You definitely have something going for you, and even if LSM doesnā€™t work out, you have as good of a shot as anyone for CAS in my opinion.

@jarrett211 aww thanks :slight_smile:

@VaishS I agree with the optional things statement as well, in most cases.
