Penn Early Decision Chances

Hello users. I am currently awaiting my senior year to start. I have both my mind and my heart set on University of Pennsylvania, which is why, to me, it only makes sense that I apply early. Here is my profile:

(By the way, not to sound high-nosed, but I feel that I should mention that I have a major hook through my grandparents who created a scholarship, and have connections, and my mother, another alumnus of the school)

SAT
Reasoning:2110 ( I have another chance in October, in which I hope to raise the score)
Subject: Math:790, Spanish:600 (I feel that this is the glitch in my application)

GPA
Unweighted: 3.85
Weighted:4.3

Workload/School Background
My current high school, La Canada High School, is a well-known, blue ribbon top tier public school, recognized as one of the top 200 in the nation (both private and public)
I am in the top 10% of my class, coming from a school that sends its pupils to various top schools around the world. My Workload in total for my high school career will come out to 8 honors/APs along with an advanced arts course. My senior classes consist of AP Spanish, Advanced Media Arts, Honors Mirror Themes, AP Calculus AB, AP Environmental Science, And Football (A 6th period sport). This means I have the potential for a 4.75 GPA next year, which I am hoping to get (Although I am applying ED).

Application
Outstanding Letters of Recommendations from Well known AP Language and Composition teacher, Nationally renowned college counselor/adviser, and football coach.
Presumed great personal statement which I am in the process of molding.

Significant ECs (hours a week, years)
Football Team member; starting center (20, 5)
I will be senior year's Varsity football team captain (20, 1)
Candy Striping at local hospital (6, 4)
Coaching/Refereeing Local Basketball Organization (3, 2)
Swimming (5, 2)
I am very involved with the art of Movie Making. I will have directed, edited, and written about 12 movies at least 20 minutes long each within a two-year span by the time I apply.

Awards/Honors
National Honors Society member (Misc., 4)
California Scholarship Foundation member (Misc., 4)
Student- Athlete Award/Recognition from Coaching Staff/School District Officials (Top Student statistically WHO PLAYS ON AND COMMITS HIMSELF TO the team).
A couple more :)

Possible Majors
Business/Economics
Mass Media Communications
Film and Cinematic studies
Possibly and probably more

Even with my solid hook, I know it is a reach, and I am realistic and tough-skinned enough to hear just how much of a reach it is for me. I would very much appreciate your honesty regarding The University of Pennsylvania, as well as some other schools that you may recommend to me.

Thank you so much

Oh, also.

Please also chance me for American University, Boston University, Boston College, Berkely, UCLA, and or USC if you would like to continue to help me out. Those are some of the other schools that I am looking at.

please chance me? I’ll chance you back!

I believe you’ll get in at the University of Pennsylvania.
I also think you have great chances of getting in the other schools you have listed.
Good luck! Don’t stress, I personally think you’re all-set for acceptance at the University of Pennsylvania.

take another SATII that you can get above 700 on

astonmartinDBS, thanks for the input. will this score be detrimental do my acceptance?
Thanks to you too, allenj5793. I really appreciate the encouragement

I think you have a good chance, especially with the hook and applying ED. Your grades are solid and your ECs look very good.

As you realize, the biggest issue for you will be the test scores. SAT I and IIs are low for Penn. Hopefully, you’ll raise the SAT I in October or at least have a better superscore. I would also consider retaking the Spanish SAT II if you think there is a decent chance of getting a better score. If not, I would take another Subject test.

My sense is that, since your grandfather gave significant money to the university and your mom is a legacy, they want to take you and will try to justify an acceptance. You have the grades and the ECs, but the scores are objective indicators that are low. I think if you can get a super score above 2200 and get another SAT II above 700 you are in (if you get another SAT II above 700 they may just ignore or discount the Spanish in your case).

Thank you, Cubsfan15. I have actually just hired a tutor for the SAT reasoning, and i am hoping to boost that up. As for the SATII, I may be in a bit of a pickle. Because i am applying ED, i only have one more chance to take an SAT (from what I understand), the october SAT. I may be wrong though, please feel free to tell me if I indeed am wrong anyone.

If you want to kill two birds with one stone, take the ACT rather than the SAT again. From my personal experience, it is much easier to get a relatively better score (conversion rates) with the ACT because it tends to test more of what you learned in school rather than your natural aptitude. Also with the ACT, colleges do not require that you submit 2 SATII tests, so that would solve your issue of the 600 in Spanish.

You should be able to take the SAT I in Oct and the SAT II in Nov. From the Penn website:

“Early Decision candidates should take these examinations either during the junior year or in the summer before the senior year, but no later than November 2009. Early Decision candidates who opt for November examinations must rush their test scores to us.”

Bernard3 - I think Penn requires all scores be sent. From the Penn website:

“Penn’s response to The College Board’s Score-Use testing policy for students is to request the student’s entire testing history.”

“Penn requires either the SAT Reasoning Test and two SAT Subject Tests OR the ACT with Writing. No preference is given to either test. However, Penn requires that applicants submit all testing results from each administration of the ACT, SAT, and SAT Subject Tests.”

Darn, I was thinking that it would be a creative solution to his score dilemma :P

Wait I may send both October and November scores early decision? That’s great! Thanks guys! I’ll be sure to be ready for both tests

more opinions please? I’ll chance back :)

grades are pretty good and ec’s are awesome. bump up the test scores a little bit and you have a darn good shot. early decision for legacies at upenn is 40%. see ya at locust walk bro.

Hey thanks a lot John doe. Hoping to see you and any other hopefuls like myself strutting down that special walkway.

If your family is influential and donates generously, you are into Penn.

Given your legacy connections and ED status, I’m pretty sure you won’t have a problem getting in.
