Penn ED 2015 INTERVIEW Thread

I was a little nervous before mine, but it turned out okay, my guy was pretty cool and had done some interesting stuff. Heck I am applying to Wharton, and he was in Engineering, we still found stuff to talk about.

My child got a call from the Penn Interviewer and will be interviewed next week. OMG It’s getting closer. Hope it goes well.

I just had my interview. It went pretty well except for when he asked me the following question: “How will investment banking in India help Indians?”

I gave half an answer; something about increasing jobs due to new avenues for foreign banks. I forgot to mention that Indians will benefit with increased wealth due to growth of foreign and local firms, resulting in economic growth, no matter how small.

I know this may sound stupid, but is that bad, considering that I’m applying to Wharton?

Prior, I did inform him that though I am interested, I may not be knowledgeable yet. I gave him the example of a trading stocks, where I understand what a certain graph might mean in terms of MACD or Stochastics but I do not understand why or how the graphs are generated YET.

Had my interview late last week – it went pretty nicely, all things considered! The longest one of the three I’ve had so far, clocking in at about an hour. My interview was an alumna in her 40’s and we met at a local coffee shop. I’m actually a RD applicant, but I got my application in by mid-October so I guess that’s why I was contacted so early.

It was also the most intense of the interviews I’ve had; she kept me TALKING! It was definitely more of a typical interview than a discussion or an informational deal. All in all, I enjoyed it, though. We managed to get a little sidetracked at one point and had a mini-debate about whether humans are kept from reaching our full potential by our inherent laziness. LOL. Hopefully she liked me, but you can never be 100% sure, can you?

Oh well…here’s hoping!

I don’t understand why some interviewers feel the need to ask such hard questions…They are not gatekeepers… IMO, they shouldn’t be the ones asking questions like, “How will investment banking in India help Indians?” Sure, the applicant may have indicated interest in investment banking on his/her application, but that doesn’t mean that the interviewer should drill the applicant with some thesis topic that they worked on their senior year in college.

powerbomb - totally agree…and as interviewers we get guidance that says that we SHOULDN’T ask these kinds of questions…the only times I’ve asked these kinds of questions are when the candidate brings up a topic to try and sound smart and I just like to make sure that they are indeed being genuine and not trying to impress me by throwing around terms. Other than in these cases, which are relatively rare, my interviews tend to be more of just a friendly conversation.

rishadhb - your interviewer sounds like he was kind of a ******. That said I wouldn’t worry about it. If the rest of the interview went fine then you should be ok. Plus it’s not like these interviews make or break your app. So relax and dont worry! :)

So I had my interview today… it was pretty chill…
He took notes on his comp, the interview was about an hour.

Some of the questions were pretty thought-probing though; like, should government regulate business (I’m a wharton applicant, mind you…)

xD

Has anyone from Minnesota been contacted for an interview?

What are some questions you guys have been asked during your interviews? Any tricky ones? Any answers you observed the interviewer particularly liked?

Hmm, most of you guys have had interviews that lasted about an hour, mine was close to two, hopefully that helps or something.

I had mine today. I’m a Wharton applicant and a Wharton grad interviewed me. It lasted around 40 minutes, is that too short? It didn’t feel awkward or anything, it just seemed like a good stopping point as neither of us really had any more questions. He never really asked any like theoretical business/economic questions like ones I’ve seen here. Is that a problem, also? His questions were more informal, asking me about my activities and interests, while I shared my thoughts and questions about the campus and university in general.

my interview is tomorrow!
its at a starbucks…any advice on what to wear? (I’m a guy)

Do interviewers read our apps and essays before the interview? Also, what should I bring with me to the interview?

as interviewers all we get is your name, address, phone, email, high school, and school you’re applying to (wharton, seas, nursing, cas).

Generally the guidance we get is to ask questions about interest in penn, activities, etc. etc. No real technical question should be asked.

Got contacted for ma interview today!!! YAYAYAY

I was contacted by my interviewer already, which surprised me since I applied RD instead of ED. I suppose that just means that there aren’t very many ED applicants in my area.

Ahh, so nervous. My first interview. >.<

I had my interview. The interviewer seemed rush, since she had to move the time due to a personal issue. She also didn’t really know what to ask, and started asking herself what should she ask next in the middle of the interview. All in all it was like 30 minutes-ish, but I don’t think it was my fault. The content was good, so oh well. I did the best I could. Certainly didn’t go badly.

hey guys me again from dallas,
i know were not supposed to worry that were not contacted for an interview yet, but i would just like to know if i should still be hopeful? lol
thank u yellow roses for responding, any other dallas people got interviews?
thanks

@2d34bl, I would say you shouldn’t lose all hope yet. I did that, but I was just contacted for one yesterday, even though all the other kids from my school already got theirs a week ago. I don’t know how it works, but I don’t think you should completely rule out the possibility of getting one. Good luck!

I heard some ppl say Penn interviews are given neither to clear admits nor clear rejects, but to those in the middle; yet some claim it “selective.” I know I should just be myself during the interview and wish for the best, but this issue still bothers me a little.
I’m an international applicant in Beijing whose interview is a few days from now.
