I think interviews are given randomly – not just to those in the middle.

Anyway, is it rude to ask the interviewer what s/he does? or is doing after graduation?

again like i’ve said multiple times on this thread…the secondary school committees select candidates at random…WE DONT GET ANY OF YOUR APPLICATION INFORMATION.

powerbomb- its definitely not rude to ask what they do…it might spark up some good conversation…i get the question all the time and since i work in M&A and most wharton candidates want to work in M&A or consulting it leads to conversations about what the candidate potentially wants to do after penn, etc.

I still haven’t been contacted for an interview. As far as I know, there are four people including myself from my school that applied ED. Two of them had their interviews a week or so ago, while me and the other kid still haven’t heard.
At what point should I assume I’m not getting one?
And does this put me at a big disadvantage against the other kids from my school who did get interveiws? (I know I’m much more qualified then them… I’m 2nd in a class of 500)

icemanblatt - The guidance over here in our secondary school committee is that all of our interviews need to be conducted and reports in the system by 11/21. Not sure if this is standard for all SSC or just mine but I would assume if you haven’t been contacted by Thanskgiving then you prob wont be getting an interview. Not having an interview doesn’t put you at a disadvantage. At bunch of my friends at Penn never had interviews and still got in. Interviews arent’t heavily weighted as part of the admissions decisions (theyre a little more important in ED than RD) but not having one doesn’t hurt - they can penalize you because your SSC didnt have the resources to interview all candidates. In all reality interviews only really matter for bubble candidates. In these cases the adcom may look at the interview report more in-depth but that’s about it. you should be fine…dont worry.

still have not been contacted for an interview and i applied 10/28… at what point can it be assumed that i will not receive one?
also, just to check, anybody from eastern CT get an interview yet?

Thought all of you who have had the good fortune to be interview would enjoy this article… [Wacky applicants baffle Penn interviewers | The Daily Pennsylvanian](http://thedp.com/article/wacky-applicants-baffle-penn-interviewers)

mumurthigal - I answered your 1st question in the post above yours…

Posted this elsewhere then noticed this board so reposting:

So I got an email today stating:

“I am contacting you on behalf of the University of Pennsylvania Alumni Secondary School Committee. Please let me know if you are interested in having an interview in regards to your application to the Wharton School.”

I also got a phone call stating the same thing. I have a couple questions.

I’m a legacy applicant. I’ve heard of something called a legacy interview. Is this what I was offered? Does this person know that I am a legacy, or is this just a regular early decision applicant interview? Do I have to schedule a legacy interview separately? What are the benefits of legacy interview vs. regular alumni interview?

I also find it funny that I was offered two locations, Penn’s campus and my local malls food court (lol!). Are there advantages to going to the campus? Do I bring my parents? What would I wear to such an event? A shirt and tie to a food court? Haha.

What are the advantages to interviewing at all? Are these taken into consideration upon my acceptance to the school, or is it simply just a question and answer type of deal to learn more? Would declining the interview be stupid?

I hope someone out there can help! Thanks.

Sounds like you got a normal ED interview request, from what you wrote, there seems to be no mention of a legacy status. Its weird that you got two places to interview, From Penn’s site they specifically state that they do not do on-campus interviews, so maybe that is a legacy interview. You should probably just contact admissions with these questions. I went dressed up to a barnes and nobles so dressing up for the food court is not much different.

Judi, see my response in your other thread on this. Bottom line, there are no legacy interviews, just legacy information sessions that are not part of the admissions process, itself. Alumni interviews by the Secondary Schools Committee are offered to applicants without regard to legacy status.

Lasted a little less than an hour. Basically she asked me questions for half an hour (extracurriculars, why Penn?, what classes are you taking?, proudest achievement?, what’s your major?, worst thing about high school?, best thing about high school, etc, etc, etc)

and then I asked her about twenty questions for half an hour. ^^

It was very chill. It’s nothing to stress about.

I wish I remembered to give her my resume before the interview ended though. I did remember to get her address!

It was nice. We talked about my involvment in school and the communication between african americans and the rest of my school( im an AA)
We also talked about sports, majors and the campus life. She didn’t ask too many questions and the conversation just felt good. It lasted around 50 minutes.

Met my interviewer at Peet’s today. It was quite informal, he even slipped a few cuss words! lol (Mind you, he was in his mid-twenties, class of '09.) We had a very chill conversation. He asked me about myself: my interests, my proudest moments, why Penn?, and some more detailed questions to gauge my knowledge of Penn. As long as you are passionate about Penn, you’ll be fine. Lasted a little over an hour.

whartongrad08 - So if I haven’t been contacted yet is it safe to assume that I won’t have an interview even if another student at my school has had one? If so it’d be unfortunate since it’d be nice to add some color to the rest of my application.

^ you’re probably not going to have an interview if you haven’t been contacted yet.

btw, i like your username. rofl

since Penn is still waiting for SAT scores to start reviewing apps, does that mean that other aspects of the app, lets say new extracurricular achievements that have occurred since Nov. 1, can be added or emailed to Penn so that they can be considered during the review?

I had my interview Saturday, and essentially I was the interviewer since he didn’t really have any questions. Good thing I had a typed page of questions or my interview would have gone under 15 minutes. But all in all it went well, he seemed grateful that I had questions.

pocketrockets - I would say it’s a long shot if you haven’t heard by now. Like I said my secondary school committee had today as a deadline for having all interviews done and reports submitted. Not sure if this is the all-up worldwide guidance or if my SSC is just trying to get things done early but I would say if you haven’t heard by Thanksgiving then you won’t be having one.

^ My interviewer told me that they had to get all the reports written up by the 21th as well. So chances are that anyone that hasn’t heard by now is not getting one.

whartongrad08 - Just curious, what do Penn interview reports entail? Do alumni interviewers ‘rate’ the applicants? Is there a form you fill out? Cornell alumni reports, for instance, consist of comments limited to around 250 words, no numerical ratings.
