Penn Ed: Sat Scores!

I got a 1900 does this kill me?

a score is not capable of tt

wait.. do the admin peeps view SAT scores differently depending on how many times the applicant took them? cause i took them once and probably could have done better a second time, but i dont have an extra forty bucks lying around.

1st time: 800 M, 740 V, 680 W

2nd time: 800 M, 760 V, 730 W (still a little dissapointed with writing, but hey, I tried)

You guys will laugh, but here goes:

1st:
510 CR
580 W
720 M

2nd:
540 CR
590 W
750 M

3rd:
650 CR
710 W
720 M

CR: From a 510 to 650
W: From a 580 to 710
M: From a 720 to 750

Composite: 2110
650 CR
710 W
750 M

As you can tell, my more or less **ty scores from my 2nd (and 1st) sitting was horrific. I didn't study for either of those tests, but I really tried hard on my last sitting (Oct. 8th), and I'm pretty satisfied. I improved by roughly 300 points between my 1st sitting and my bested combined score. Whoopie!

KRabble - You are a contender!

I think it just confirms the fact that the SATs are stupid. But you've gotta believe me that I spent a good 2 hours everyday of the summer going over question after question, reviewing like crazy. lol.. was it worth it? You be the judge!!

The whole thing is insanity, IMO. Studies show that SAT scores have a poor correlation with success in later life. More important are factors like motivation, ability to get along with people etc. Our generation has it the worst - AP tests, SAT IIs, SATs, ACTs, ridiculous expectations for ECs - etc, etc. It's all such a game. I try not to let it get to me, because I refuse to say there is only one place I'd be happy. Congrats on the scores, though!

2400...yeah I am the shiznit.

Yeah, it's a sad way to run things, but I guess the efficiency of the whole thing is too tempting for colleges to not use :o How would Penn view an increase in my scores? Would it be a negative thing that I got a pretty crappy score the first time around? I plan on only writing down the last two sittings, but how greatly would it affect me having them be able to see my poorer writing and reading scores?

I don't get it sr6622...do you just go around posting crap about SATs? What a waste of time.

I think Penn does take some people with SATs under 2100, but usually only if there is a hook involved - a talent, exceptional leadership potential, legacy, sports, minority, geographic or economic status. If you have none of those things, my guess is you'd better be not just in the average SAT range but in the 75% and over, with everything else going for you, too. Rachel Toor's book, College Confidential, about admissions at Duke, was an eye opener about SAT averages - what I wrote is straight from her book. Colleges want to encourage all of us to apply and will never discourage anyone. That raises their selectivity, and their rankings.

can i get into Penn SEAS with nothing spectacular and needing a significant amount of aid????

i've average SATs (2140), good grades(taking A-levels, might've a 'B' or two!), unranked, good(unspectacular again) recs, good (i think) essays, few ec's and a 700mathiic, 730phy & 680lit.. :o .. and i'm an international student!

applying ED!

I would consider ED a hook also. SEAS has slightly more favorable admissions stats than the college -30% acceptance overall, vs. 20 for CAS,(I don't know if that translates to low 40s for SEAS/ED vs. low 30s for CAS/ED but as others have pointed out, maybe it's a self-selected population. I think you have a chance, though.

Regarding aid, unless you are from Canada or Mexico, aid for international students is very limited.

thanks collegecountdown..

abt the aid, i know aid is limited... but acc to Penn, if it doesn't think it can provide the student with the aid reqd, it'll reject the student! so i don't have to worry abt breakin the ED contract thing if I'm not given enough aid, because i'll be rejected instead! :)

i know i'll probably be deferred or rejected! :(

KRabble - Theoretically, they just take the highest scores, but sure, there is the question of which is better - top scores in one sitting, spread between different sittings, or improving with time, like you did. Improving overall, each time, is a positive - and shows overall development and potential. Are you bilingual?- if so, they may infer increased language skills and more representative recent scores.

I'm bilingual (Korean), but I speak Korean no better than I speak English. I don't have an accent but my parents were born in Korea and came here, so I don't have the same English background that a student with American-born parents might have. My most recent writing and reading scores were probably the most representative for me as a whole. I'm a fairly competent writer and I read a magazine or two ever so often (I don't have masses and masses of books, but I read school books and sometimes books for pleasure).

i came to this country 6 years ago(but i'm a citizen). Is that a hook. Also, my grade was bad during freshamn year due to the language barrier but i significantly improved it year by year. so overall, its prolly a little below average but by last year alone. its prolly ranked top 3%.(my school does not rank).

also, should i sned them a letter about this? i asked the admission office 3 times and none of them know what they are talking about. I got 3 different answers

I got my SAT scores on my birthday.
800V
790M
770W
woo hoo!
but i'm not doing penn ed.

collegeboard gave u a great birthday present. you should write them a thank you letter....but then again its collegeboard...so maybe.......NOT.!!
