Penn EDers: Academic Index

Right, but I WISH I had a 10...lol this can't matter that much really, it's extremely harsh

letmepass: GPA inflates the result for most people. Rank is definitely important

I hate rank.

I have an upward trend in my grades, and I'm ranked 13th.
My friend has a downward trend in his grades, and he's ranked 11th.
My GPA was higher than his for both sophomore and junior years.

Which is better?
=(

my class rank is screwed up cuz my school wouldnt accept my credits when i transferrd. a kid in my class only has a 3.5 and has taken about half of the aps i took, yet he is ranked higher than me.

not trying to brag or anything...just venting. stupid school system.

College
230.5 (9 out of 9)

AI is very inconsistent especially if you go to very competitive high school. I go to a top 20 high school and it doesn't rank nor does it weight so if i put my gpa in I get 231.5 9/9, but if i had to guess my rank i would guess it to be around 10-15/300, now a 10 gives me a 225.5 8/9 whereas a 15 gives 223.5 7/9, so i really don't think its a very reliable measure. And yes it is a bit outdated, and if ivies even still use i, they use it (the AI) sparingly. A Is for Admission was published in 1999 and written between '97 and '98, so its about 7 to 8 years old, and better pools of students have definitely made other admissions factors (i.e. anything other than transcript and sat) more important.

I got a 6, but I think I have better ECs than some people w/ higher AIs than me... I have like six good leadership positions... And my personal essay was really unique (I think), it was about the American Museum of Natural History and anthropology... And I sent two supplemental photos of my artwork... And my interview went really well.

But also, I'm Caucasian and from NY...

Blahhhhhhhhhhhhh, I hate all you smart people !

Sorry, just venting and frustrated because I think I'll be deferred and having really worked on my other apps yet and I love Penn.

How do you do academic index with ACTs?

use a conversion chart... do a google search and itll come up...

and this was used for recruited athletes originally... as long as you had a 200 u could then be admitted to the school... a school like penn who uses a holistic approach would, i assume, make sure you had at least a 200, just so you qualify as academically capable, and then acceptance would come down to other factors (essays, recs, ecs, interviews, legacy, etc)

btw mine is 211.5, 5\9 when i put gpa in...
206.5, 4\9 when i put rank in...

good thing i had two soild interviews and am a legacy...

Your Academic Index: 236
Your AI Rank: 9 out of 9

Wharton

^^ i swear i read something about u (dopamine) writing the huntsman essay. did u change ur mind?

neways...
w/ rank 217 6/9....
w/ weighted gpa 227 8/9

Don't forget to post which undergrad school you're applying to.

crap sorry guys..

217 6/9 w/rank
227 8/9 w GPA

wharton

um, the AI doesnt work well for me:
226.5
8/9 bc my gpa is 4.41

212.5
5/9 bc our school only ranks by deciles. i am 10%...

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH...

oops oh yea
CAS

If I put that I'm 9th in my class (which I am), i get a 5/9 but if i put my gpa (4.00), i get an 8/9. hmm

and this was used for recruited athletes originally... as long as you had a 200 u could then be admitted to the school... a school like penn who uses a holistic approach would, i assume, make sure you had at least a 200, just so you qualify as academically capable, and then acceptance would come down to other factors (essays, recs, ecs, interviews, legacy, etc)

CAS

So far, this is how it is...

CAS:
3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8, 9, 9

Wharton:
6, 6, 6, 9, 9

mcgruff, which school are you?

And ew, legacies make me cry.

onevoice... is that with ranks or with gpas...

Yeah ride, I ended up changing my mind. I don't want to be bound to international business - there are some interesting entertainment and media courses at wharton that I want to take :).
