Penn Engineering

Hey guys.

I have just applied to Princeton University and I am applying many other unis(I want to cut down my list) in the regular deadline. I am thinking about doing an Engineering major (possibly computer).

What do you guys think about Upenn Engineering? How does it compare with other Ivies and non-Ivies like Duke, Northwestern, and Washington St. Louis?

Thanks a lot for your help.

@IlluminatiIsReal I would say Penn engineering is on par with Northwestern engineering. It is probably slightly better than Duke engineering but at the undergrad level this difference is probably negligible. it is definitely quite stronger than WUSTL. I think this order is true for general engineering school strength and specifically for computer engineering, but it is not true for every engineering discipline. For example for bioengineering Duke and Penn are quite stronger than the rest.

In terms of overall undergraduate standing and prestige I would say Penn and and Duke are the strongest followed closely by Northwestern. WUSTL comes a little bit after but it is still a top college obviously.

@Penn95 Thanks for your reply. It would help me if you could also tell me how it compares with other Ivies.(Cornell, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and Brown)

@IlluminatiIsReal

for overall engineering strength, especially for undergrad, I would split the ivies into 4 groups:

Cornell~Princeton > Columbia~Penn~Harvard > Yale ~ Brown> Dartmouth

Now for overall prestige & perceived quality the consensus is something along the lines of:

HYP > Columbia ~Penn > Dartmouth~Brown~Cornell

Of course if you ask many different people they might give you slight variations of this but probably nothing drastically different.

2018 U.S. News Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs:

Duke - Tied for #20 with one other (Tuition & Fees = $53,744)
Penn - Tied for #25 with four others (Tuition & Fees = $53,534)

2018 U.S. News Best Graduate Engineering Schools:

Duke - Tied for #29 with 1 other (Tuition = $52,925 per year)
Penn - Tied for #19 with 3 others (Tuition = $32,286 per year)

Penn graduate engineering is a definite bargain at that price, whereas Duke is one of the most expensive in the country.
