Penn Football

Hey anyone who goes to the games at Penn. How are they? I want to go to a school with some crazy games.. or at least a good tailgating party beforehand. I guess if the games suck it doesn't matter since I already applied ED, but anyways.. how are they?

I go to every game. They suck. It's not a bad environment like at a D3 school, but the truth is that the overwhelming majority of students just don't care.

There's no tailgating at all. Generally speaking, if people go to the school for academics, they don't go there for football.

However, if you start going to the games, you'll find like-minded people, and you might have some fun that way. Basketball is also much more interesting at Penn than football.

well thats unfortunate... i guess i will be one of those lone kids at the game then. I even included wanting to see Ivy League football in my why penn essay haha. They are probably going to look at that part and think, "why the hell would he want to see that?".

well its good to hear that some kids will have SOME interest. Academics are definately more important.. but there is nothing bettter than waking up saturday morning primed for some college football.

i'm with you pahka!!! :)

When my son was a freshman and we were coming for a weekend visit I was bugging him for weeks to make sure he got tickets to the football game! He kept dragging his feet and I was insistent that I didn't want it to be "sold out". HaHa. The stadium was about 1/5 full. I didn't think I mistakenly wandered into the SEC........

You need to re-orient yourself to BASKETBALL.

i'd love to have my school have a great football spirit...like paint ur face on game day..and parties afterward. guess that's not really gonna happen if u want academics to be ur first priority. but b-ball's good too

ehh basketball is great and all... but i still gotta have my football.. I am guessing the Eagles games are pretty crazy. Haha i will worry about that if I get in though.. guess I gotta do that first

from Ohio? Me too. If you really want to experience college football, use the $100 round trip southwest flight from philly to columbus, visit some friends at ohio state, and catch the game with them. You won't find college football anywhere near philly, and it's easier to get to ohio state (and possibly some hs friends) this way than it is to get to penn state.

Eagles games are solid, but that's another demographic entirely...

15 years ago, Penn got over 35,000 at homecoming against Princeton.
In 2007, homecoming got only 15,000, and it wasn't even against Princeton.

Penn football seems like it's in something of a down cycle right now. There was a lot more enthusiasm a few years ago when Penn was winning the Ivy League championship year after year.

But it's true that the Penn sports scene centers around basketball. The Palestra, Penn's basketball court, is legendary in Philadelphia -- so much so that all of the other local college teams play a couple of games there every season against each other, not Penn. It is full to the rafters, and crazy, for almost every game. With a couple of off years, and some competition from Princeton (but not recently), Penn has dominated the Ivy League in men's hoops for 30 years, and its real competition comes from the out-of-league games it plays -- usually a couple early games against marquee opponents (never at home, though), and the annual city series with Villanova, St. Joe's, LaSalle, Temple, and Drexel. (The "Big 5" area schools, not counting Drexel, schedule each other every year, and most of them schedule Drexel, too.) Games like Penn-Villanova tend to be MUCH more competitive than you might think.

How about participating instead of watching?

If you are not over 172 pounds Penn has a no-cut football team for you to join, it's called sprint football. The season is short (over by November) so you have plenty of free time for social and academic pursuits.
When my S was a freshman, they won their league championship and I just took a peak of their schedule this year, so far they are undefeated.

There actually is tailgating before the home games.. I've been a few times and it was pretty fun, as are the games. Not amazing though.

Ouch, man, ouch...

Yeah, I maintain my statement: Temple Owls football - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I actually was going to say Temple might be an exception (as Penn State isn't what I would call "near Philly") but you guys have to win a game once in a while to count.

We were a lot better in the past that is true, but we definitely don't suck. We're 2-2 right now and the two teams we lost to were Villanova (in OT) and Lafayette, which I believe are both ranked pretty high in the top 25 national polls. Villanova even beat #1 ranked Richmond a few weeks ago.

Last year was the first time the football team had a losing season (4-6) in something like 15 years.

Clearly you're not paying attention, because despite our record, we're having a great year, and are on the verge of becoming very serious MAC contenders, which means Bowl Games in the very near future...
