Penn Fraternities!

I saw that a thread for sororities had revived so I decided to start this one for fraternities. What are the general reps of the big presence frats? Especially castle, zate and owls?

Here you go, this isn’t mine but i think it’s a pretty good summary of the scene

Castle - international kids, amazing physical house, sometimes awkward, mediocre sorority relations. Brotherhood is falling apart… fast.
Zetes - international kids, decent house, mediocre sorority relations, SMALLER pledge classes, presence on campus is diminishing
Skulls - Jewish/Americans who live on locust. Poor sorority relations, a lot of brothers in PSG, known for trying to hook freshman with early dirty rush but fail when spring comes.
Phi Delt - Rarely parties (dry house), but has mixers with good sororities. Southern Christians. “Old Preppy” American (button downs, boatshoes) and athletic.
SAE - Throws a lot of parties, growing sorority relations. Mostly Christian. American. Newer pledge classes are strong. Brotherhood seems good. Pretty “bro.” Parties this year are more quantity>quality. Tries to be like state school frats.
Kappa Sig - Throws few parties. Mostly American but has some minorities. Has good sorority relations. Even mix between religions. Decent amount of cocaine. Newer pledge classes are strong. Try to be very “bro” but are too metro/preppy to pull it off.
OZ - Rich. Good sorority relations–>A ton of cocaine and other hard drugs. Great older pledge classes. Moving up in the off-campus scene. Brothers-if you can them that-don’t really have anything in common except for doing drugs.
Pikapp - growing sorority relations. American. Hipster/preppy. Strong new pledge class. Brotherhood is good. House is decent but kind of far. Emulates a “classic American fraternity” you would expect at a state school.
Owls - Rich, awkward international kids. Smaller and smaller pledge classes. Declining sorority relations. Best kids already graduated. “Brothers” care more about image than their house.
Theos - Rich Jewish kids from urban cities. Currently best off campus house. Good sorority relations. Some cocaine and drugs. Brothers are kind of divided between older and younger classes.
A’s - A ton of cocaine, all the drugs ruined this year’s SMALL pledge class. Typically WASP but starting to fall apart cause no one cares. Excellent chapter house but Brothers are ***s, even to each other
Beta - Athletic. American. Older pledge classes stronger than newer ones. Good/mediocre sorority relations. Had a really bad time last year. VERY SMALL pledge class. Looked as if house was going to fall apart but they’ve been doing decent this year. Pretty drug free
ZBT - Very Jewish. Competes for the best-of-the-worst of the Jewish frats. Showed some promise 2 years ago but last year’s pledge class was very awkward. Good house. Decent drug scene.
AEPi - Rising Jewish house. Has a new chapter house. Off campus house has a lot of parties. Mediocre sorority relations. More “New American” guys (like the ones in PiKapp)
TEP - Jewish stoners. Deals a lot of pot. Apathetic. Don’t do anything at their chapter house due to its *ty location and quality. Off campus house is actually on campus and has decent parties. Mediocre sorority relations.
Sig Chi - Great sorority relations. Athletes. Having a bad year due to social probation from getting caught with Everclear last year. Funny guys. Presence on campus is small but have good closed events with sororities.
Sammy - Jewish dorky kids. Has become a lot worse since they recolonized. Poor sorority relations. Does a good job of catering to freshman but can’t keep them for rush. Diverse Brotherhood. Some really weird kids.
Pike - American. Takes pride in the fact they aren’t a rich frat. Mediocre sorority relations. Very “bro” in the Animal House sense. Brotherhood is good. Past two years fell off the radar. New class looked like a diverse, mismatch of guys and house was weak last year but has done well this year so far.
Phi Psi- Nerdy guys. Mix of Jewish and Christian. Mostly Americans. Don’t really drink or do drugs at all. Poor sorority relations. Brothers seem to like each other though.
Sig Ep-Known as the drunken degenerates frat in the past. Apparently completely redone this year but yet to see. Poor sorority relations and house location. Wait and see what happens this year.
AXP- Kind of under the radar but throws good parties. Mediocre/poor sorority relations. Athletic. Brothers seem cool with each other. Known to be *******s towards girls.
Pi Lam- Hipsters. Very “musically aware.” Don’t throw open parties. No sorority relations known of. Have closed parties/concerts at their house.

sounds like there’s a lot of cocaine / drugs in the frat scene. is this true? my impression was that it was mostly drinking??

Do you have to be rich to join a fraternity at Penn?

don’t have to be rich at all to join A fraternity but some pretty much require that just check out places during open rush and don’t be afraid to pledge somewhere you like just because it’s small or less known.

Castle and Zetes are more for the rich international scene, the rest you’ll be fine.

Be aware that Skulls was recently suspended because of an incident over New Years, so they are no longer an official society though they may go the secret society route as a result.

Seems like I would enjoy Phi Delt. Would I get a ton of crap for that?

Consider this: Anyone who tells you about fraternities does so after having pledged either zero or one of them. These reputations could be based off of things brothers were known for five years ago, which means that none of the brothers who were around during that time are still active undergraduate members of the fraternity.

Fraternities go through different phases during their lifetimes, and that is all due to the brothers that comprise it. If you join a fraternity, you have the chance to shape the way the fraternity acts as a whole, even as a pledge, so honestly, ignore the advice from people claiming to know about every fraternity. Nobody knows about every fraternity. Also, the guy who wrote about the different fraternities didn’t even include a fair number of them (off the top of my head, I don’t see KA, Fiji or DKE on there).

My point is that if you rush and find a group of guys you like, see where it leads regardless of what others say. Only you will know if a fraternity is right for you, and you will only know that after finding out on your own.

bump… any other ideas about Greek Life?

I’m really curious as an international student.

Honestly, I don’t even really understand what it is at this point.

Immature international player club. No loyalty. Keen on each other ;)

This post is from 2010 and I don’t think it’s accurate. I’m a Sophomore now at Penn and for most frats this is not how I would best describe them.
