Penn is overrated because of WHARTON.

Haha, this will be a can of worms. I just want to hear others opinions on Penn. Most kids don't even experience Wharton, but you know that these rankings are completely because of Wharton.

And in other breaking news…

…the sky is blue and the Pope is Catholic!

Were you, by chance, rejected by Penn? just curious…

Actually, didn’t apply to Penn. I can promise that. Penn is way too pre-professional for me.

Almost everyone there is pre-law, pre-med, or pre-business oriented. Not my type of education at all.

^^
Good for you and leave it at that. Chicago’s education is not the type of education I would want at all.

Penn should be tied for 6th or in 7th, but it still deserves to be ahead of Brown, Columbia, Cornell, and Dartmouth.

Penn has Wharton, a top 5 med school, and a top 10 law school. That is why it is ranked high.

Penn is a good school with strong programs in many areas, the most prominent being Wharton. Get over it.

I was about to apply to Univ. of Chicago, but its application was too homo and the core curriculum is even more homo. lol

Homo?

Yeah, your way of generalizing things would make me concerned about your ability to understand Chicago’s philosophy on education.

The essays are simply five essay topics and they’re not really challenging at all. They just ask you to think a little harder than what you’re used to. And granted, one of the essays is even a create your own, so you don’t have to answer their essay questions. If you’re complaining about that…then wow.

And the core? Please, if you actually learned about their core you would see how much flexibility exists within the core. It’s nothing like Columbia’s, if anything, it’s the antithesis of Columbia’s core. While we have a core, kids take very different classes. You seriously get the privilege to design and create the kind of core and humanities experience you want. But whatever, probably not worth wasting my time trying to explain this…

Chicago has a the number one economics school (Booth) in the country, a top-five law school as well, and a top medical school and residency/fellowship program in the biological sciences department.

The differences between the two schools lie in their approach towards education.

I don’t go to either school, but Chicago > Penn.

The former is underrated; the latter is overrated.

ps-Chicago beats Philly.

[Hyde Park](<a href=“Neighborhood Attractions | Visit UChicago”>http://hydepark.uchicago.edu/)

Proof that even hyde park (only 5-10 minutes) from the heart of downtown chicago is an awesome place to be.

For the record, Philly’s Fairmount Park is not only larger (and more awesome, as parks go) than Hyde Park, it’s also the largest urban park in the world.

We’ll leave the rest of the Chicago vs. Philly debate to another time. :)

UChicago is an amazing school but its tragic flaw is that its f****** boring and its students are strange.

I think that might be the biggest misconception out there. That’s so far from the truth today, when it comes to UChicago students.

You can find just about anyone on campus who can dispel any rumors or stereotypes about Chicago. The school has seriously revitalized in the past couple years.

Trust me. I wouldn’t be going there if I felt otherwise. I was accepted to Columbia and Duke, which are more known schools, but I chose Chicago because I fell in love with the artsy/hipster culture that existed.

Have you seen the new construction projects at Chicago? This year they are opening a state-of the art new glass dorm that homes over 800 students. It was created specifically to have a more social vibe with lots of lounges, kitchens, reading/music rooms. There’s a new center for the creative and performing arts opening up. The school is only 10 minutes from downtown Chicago and nightlife.

If there’s any student body I would liken UChicago kids to be like, it would be Yale. The willingness to intellectually explore realms definitely resonates with UChicago kids. These kids aren’t boring, they’re just passionate about learning.

to be honest, ilovepeople712, you bring up Chicago’s location vs. UPenn…and having explored chicago, including the UChicago campus and the surroundings…I’m going to have to disagree.

Sure, Hyde Park is nice and quaint and a lot of rich folks live there.
But, on the OTHER side of UChicago…the side where UChicago likes to cover up and conveniently hide from pamphlets is pure ghetto. People selling drugs on the street, carrying guns, etc. My piano teacher was robber at knife-point on her way to UChicago (where she teaches) not once but TWICE over the course of one week, the second time, with her purse being stolen including IDs, car keys, etc.

So…yeah. Chicago might be better than Philly…but not the area around UChicago.

Of course, Penn also has as many or more top-10 and top-20 liberal arts departments than most of its peers, plus unparalleled interdisciplinary study opportunities for all of its undergrads (allowed to take courses in all 4 undergrad schools plus the Law School, School of Design, Annenberg School for Communication, School of Social Policy and Practice, Graduate School of Education, etc.), but I guess none of that counts. :)

Aren’t you at Hopkins? Baltimore? Are you serious…?

My friend at Hopkins complains about the ghetto much more than my current friend at Chicago. Yes, it’s there. But honestly, any big city including Philly have those problems. Columbia, for example with it’s proximity to Harlem.

The key is to be smart in all these cities. I would never give up an opportunity to go to a school with such awesome city exploration possibilities just because one side of it is next to the “south side.” There is so much to do and see in Chicago.

why are you bringing up hopkins? lol. it wasn’t mentioned in the thread was it?

stick to chicago.

the ghetto is right next door
and you specifically said how much better the locaiton at Uchicago was

why can’t i bring up hopkins? that was a stupid statement. you brought up something that wasn’t neccesarily in the thread prior to your introducing it. anything is relevant at this point.

i have been to hopkins. the ghetto is right next door TOO. one of my best friends is going to hopkins next year. i was accepted to hopkins. i’m not completely unaware about the school.
