Penn or Brown for ED?

I cannot decide where to apply ED. I like a lot about both schools, but dislike a few things. I am undecided for my major but leaning towards communication at Penn and something in the humanities/social sciences at Brown. So, should I apply ED to Penn or Brown or just apply to both in the regular round?

Penn:
Pros:
Has communication (which I here is good) and graphic design programs
Can take classes in Wharton (I'm interested in the consumer psychology minor)
Beautiful urban campus
Slightly easier to get into than Brown

Cons:
A lot of pre-professional people/not that many artsy and creative people like me?
Slightly less prestigious than Brown
Competitive/ not laid-back

Brown
Pros:
Open curriculum!
Undergraduate focus
Artsy/creative people
Can take classes at RISD
Laid-back

Cons:
Hard to schedule classes at RISD
Too liberal?
Philadelphia is better than Providence
Slightly harder to get into than Penn

Quick Stats:
White, female, Midwest
GPA: 3.75 uw, 4.45 w (my school is competitive)
Rank: school does not rank, but top 10%
ACT: 34 (1st try, am retaking for kicks this month)
SAT Subjects: 770 U.S. History, 720 Biology E
E.C.'s: editor-in-chief of newspaper, lots of other journalism related activities, regional/state art awards and exhibitions, 2 varsity sports, mock trial, job as assistant teacher
Awards: national merit semifinalist, cum laude society, ap scholar with distinction

Penn is ‘slightly less prestigious than Brown’? You don’t wanna say that in Penn’s forum.

^ I would say it’s the complete opposite but I could be biased.

There are tons of non pre-professional people here, probably close to half of the people I know aren’t. Things here can be laid back especially if you’re not taking pre-professional courses but not to an absurd degree like Brown.

Brown so I can have a higher chance of getting in to UPenn :)

But seriously if you don’t like the people there then don’t go…

It is my parents’ views that Brown is more prestigous. Their views could be wrong/outdated. So, I don’t mean to offend. In reality, any differences are negligible.

You’re a perfect match for communication:

^^

dont be an a**

Freshprince is right. People who are not pre-professional are very laid back at Penn… surprisingly so for an Ivy League school.

your description of brown seems MUCH more positive.
i think your heart is leaning there lol
but, no offense to upenn, but i loved brown’s hippie, laid-back culture. and there open curriculum is genius.
my parents just dont want me so far away though :/

I’d say the Open Curriculum (aka “no curriculum”) is better described as “a hangover from the most self-indulgent excesses of the Baby Boomer era” than “genius.”

Of course it makes sense that Brown continues it, because without that they don’t really have a leg to stand on vis-a-via other Ivies when it comes to having something that makes them unique.

^Dominated :)

I wasn’t using the term genius in its literal sense.
I meant it’s just a perfect match for someone like me–therefore it’s genius :p

If your not set on Wharton, I would highly advise Brown. I would say outside Wharton, Penn and Brown are comparable program-wise. However, the open course system at Brown and grade inflation there make it the clear choice.

I’m pretty sure Brown is not more prestigious or harder to get into than Penn…

if you’re not sure which college to apply ED to, you probably shouldn’t apply ED to any college. you’d only apply ED to Penn if you knew Penn was your absolute first choice

I love “Brown is slightly more prestigious than Upenn”

Not a good thing to say in penn’s forum

My mom, who went to penn, didn’t even know Brown was an ivy until last week (30 years later lol) <- small survey true

I think you should apply to Brown where you think you would fit in better (artsy/creative people)

penn has admitted policy of favoring Eds.
