Which school has bigger name recognition?

Penn, easily. Penn State is a great state school, but Uni of Penn is an Ivy League school.

/coming from someone at Pitt

You mean they’re not the same school? ;-)

If by bigger name recognition, who have more people heard about? Penn State, hands down. When you say “Penn”, most people think you’re talking about Penn State. Only people who pay attention to higher ed and finance folks know that Penn is an ivy league university that is different from Penn State.

If by bigger name recognition, which one is more prestigious, Penn hands down.

/coming from a PSU alum!

^^ I tend to agree with that assessment. I think PSU has more name-recognition (helped by its athletics, no doubt), but Penn is probably the more prestigious degree (though PSU is an excellent university as well).

Go wherever you think you’d succeed the best, though.

Penn State: Better known (sports).
Penn: More prestigious.

Penn State definitely has better name recognition. Penn’s recognition rides along Wharton (and infrequently the Ivy League name), which is basically known to the rich (or “upper-middle class” as people put it here), the employers, and the Asians who are obsessed with rankings.

As someone who grew up in PA and very seriously considered attending Penn, I can tell you that PSU has much more name recognition than Penn (the only exception being in the Philly area). If people hear “Penn” and “Philly” in the same breath, they wonder when PSU added a Philly branch campus.

Penn/Penn State is a perfect, almost poetic example of being well-known without being prestigious, and vice-versa

People who don’t know Penn don’t matter. Look outside the US and Penn has a major edge. Not to mention who knows what will become of PSU after Joe Pa.

Any big sports school is going to be better know by the masses.

Not really. Like I said, Penn’s only more known in the academia and business circles, even outside the states. Not many outside of those circles know Penn (or Wharton, for that matter). Also, I believe Penn State is better known in the engineering circle.
