Penn or UMich Honors

collegeguy, it seems that we're in the same predicament. Both Penn and Michigan seem eeriely the same but have subtle differences about them. I really love Ann Arbor as a college town, but Philadelphia also offers a lot as a city. A lot of people seem to say to go with the school that you feel you have the best fit with, but, in all honesty, I have about the same degree of comfortableness with either school.

I visited Penn a while ago and found that there wasn't the air of pretentiousness that some people in this thread claim come from Penn and similar Ivy Leagues. It's certainly a detracting point for sure, but has anyone had any experiences with Penn and Michigan's student bodies and how they compare?

I also got accepted into UCLA and Berkeley, but the complete lack of financial aid they're offering me (again, out of state) is almost ridiculous and I've nearly completely eliminated them from my college options. This leaves me with Michigan and Penn.

UPenn. Definitely.

daestrivan i know exactly how you feel. i have many family members who have gone to either michigan or upenn and am perfectly comfortable going to either. i honestly feel like they are both unbelievable options but it is still tough to decide on one of them. the michigan student body as it is a huge university is incredibally diverse and you can pretty much find anyone with similar interests as you . upenn is also a pretty large and diverse student body. i dont think we can lose with our two options. let me know what you think

I don't think being in honors at UM really plays into the decision. You get to take a handful of small seminar classes and that's about it.

My guide at Campus Day chose UM over Penn.

When he visited Penn, it was all about prestige and Ivy league. UM is much more laid back.
A UM degree is worth just as much as a Penn degree.
If you're going to grad school, you'll be able to get into the best grad schools from both colleges.

Those are the things he had to say.

heyy im having the exact same problem right now. Umich honors or penn?? money is not a concern of mine, more the type of people i'll be with. i live in philadelphia so upenn is obviously a lot closer to home than umich. i dont really know anyone at either school which scares me a little about umich because i feel like so many people there come with a huge group of friends. i know both are equally great academically, i guess it really comes down to the type of college experience i want? ahhh so confused can someone make this decision for me please

I love how the people who support Penn make posts like "UPenn definitely" while those who support Michigan give real reasons. I don't actually know if the people at Penn think it's all about prestige and reputation, but based on the posters who support Penn, I'm starting to get that feeling since they can't give really good reasons. And despite what supergravity says (he/she sounds like an applicant, not a student), honors does play an important role in choosing one over the other. If the feeling of size of a school and the academic level of your peers matters at all to you, being honors should matter. It puts Michigan on a higher level than Penn in both of those areas, whereas if you were just going into regular LSA, Penn would be slightly better in both personal attention and intelligence of fellow students.
