I got into Penn today and am struggling to decide between UMich honors and Penn. I love Ann Arbor and the athletics and atmosphere at michigan and while the academics seem great it seems awfully hard to turn down Penn. Umich just seems like it is so much fun along with being great academics. What should i do?

What is your major?

When you'r elike me, who got into UMich honors but rejected from Penn, you'll realize the greatness of the latter.

I'm having a similar problem. I wasn't so sure I'd get accepted to UPenn, so I really grew to like Michigan over the months, especially its reputation for being a great university to go to for the ultimate college experience. Now, I'm caught in a pretty big dilemma.

I'm planning on being a biology major, by the way.

I got into both and it hardly seems like a decision to me. I'd choose Wharton anyday.

I would understand a person choosing UMich over penn for the FULL College experience reason

i am probably going to be a history or econ major... i am in the college at penn... and i really feel like i can get the FULL college experience at umich but also love penn.. very confused

What makes you think you can't get the full college experience at Penn?

i think the social life is great at penn but i mean michigan is one of the top athletic programs in the country and i think that adds a lot socially. plus i love ann arbor

I'm also in a similar situation. I got my Michigan admission ages ago and now Penn admitted me too. I plan to major in Electical & Electronics Engineering. I know Wharton is wonderful at Penn but how is SEAS compared to Mich's engineering school?

Penn's engineering school is quite small, and as such most likely ranked lower than it should be. It is a great program, especially the bioengineering department.

As for not having the college experience at Penn - well you are completely mistaken. Go to the Penn-Princeton basketball game in the palestra and then tell me you won't get the real college experience. I think athletes that aren't on the fast-track to NFL or NBA are more connected with the school, and the Ivy League creates some fierce competition.

just a note....three of my friends here at penn transfered from umichigan...hopefully that makes u consider ur penn acceptance a little more before jumping on the umich bandwagon (which is also a very good school)...but come on...its PENN!!!

I'm in a similar situation, except I'm torn between Michigan Honors and Cornell Engineering. I've dreamed of going to Michigan for ages. All of my closest friends are going there, friends I would love to stay close with for the rest of my life.

I was looking forward to the parties, getting a section of seats together in the Big House, getting the full Big Ten experience while still being at a great school.

I got into Northwestern engineering first. That made me think I really had a chance at the Ivies. I got rejected from Wharton and Columbia College, but into Cornell Engineering. I'm really torn as to what I'm going to do now.

I'm just hoping I can get into Ross Business pre-admit. That would keep me at Michigan.

hey just wondering...why did your friends transfer from michigan? im having the same problem right now---Penn or UMich honors and i honestly am completely 50/50 right now. any help is greatlyyyyyyy appreciated!

24,500 undergrads @ UMich? Holy poo.

I think it is a much better college experience (and certainly something you can look back on with great pride) to be part of the Ivy League and the tradition and honor that goes with it.

a few of my UMich friends say that the honors program is basically a joke. like apparently it's really easy to get into, and there isnt much benefit in being part of it. so something tells me that saying Michigan Honors doesn't like upgrade the status of your academic program from like damn good to really really damn good.

Penn. It's where it's at.

UMich Honors!!!

hey, did your friends get all their credits transferred to Penn or did they encounter some roadblocks?

thanks

well the two that transferred into wharton did bc they had a lot of wharton classes u have to take at wharton..so they had to stay an extra couple semesters. the ones that transfered into SAS (arts and sciences) didn't have too much trouble.

Michigan Honors really doesn't enhance the academic experience, per se. The counselors can bail you out occasionally and there are some nice perks, like getting to meet on-campus celebrities in small settings whenever they visit-with free food! Also, it helps with getting to live in South Quad, the most convenient dorm on Central Campus.

I'd say that Penn will be a far cushier experience than U of M. From what I hear, grading is far more forgiving and even though we have to work so hard at Michigan from getting weeded out, employers and adcoms will give the edge to Penn if you're in a borderline case. Michigan will get you the same mileage if you've done well in undergrad. The other pros to Penn are Philly and a less brutal winter. This winter wasn't so bad but remembering last winter still makes me want to cry and hide under blankets now.

Best of luck to you!
